Was wondering if there was any food photographers out there in the mix. I've been doing some experiments with food photography lately and am really enjoying it. Maybe I've found my niche.

How did you get started?
How does selling your work differ from other types of photography?
Do you use stock agencies? I've been checking out a few websites like Stock Food.ca and they have some amazing work - how hard is it to get them to rep you?

Just looking for some general first direction into this type of photography.

Thanks!
Ashley

I am also interested in hearing more about getting into professional food photography! I have been doing food photography as a hobby for 2-3 years now for my website (<a href="http://closetcooking.blogspot.com/">Closet Cooking</a>) and the idea of possibly being able to make a living from it is certainly a nice one.

Seeing how poor the photographs are in some cook books as compared to how nice yours are I would think you could make a good living taking food shots.

I just don't understand how you stay so thin Kevin  Perhaps it's all that exercise you get from rapid shooting.

we should arrange an ad hoc where he cooks for us, and then we go all ape-shit strobing the food to an extra-well done crisp.

Find a publisher that publishes a lot of food/cook books. Ask those publishers to introduce you agents. Contact the agents and try to set up a meeting. There are A LOT of photographers that specialize in food.

Good luck.

I've been in food photography business for at least 4-5 years .... this is not the easiest subject to shoot but practice makes it better (I really mean that). You can find few really good food photography books out there and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to dip into food photography .... My website is http://www.senicphoto.com

Great site and photos Kevin. I was so inspired (and hungry) that I just cooked up a batch of your Roasted Apple Sauce.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/shaky_jt/4098672759/" title="roasted applesauce by shaky JT, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2775/4098672759_18db412515.jpg" width="500" height="334" alt="roasted applesauce"></a>

And I can sympathize with your situation of having to cook in a closet sized kitchen - mine is pretty small too.

Anyway, an ad-hoc event at Kevin's sounds good!

its something I do as a hobby but a lot of Cake makers and others ask me for photos

I sometimes prefer food over people cause food doesn't talk back verbally ;)

I really won't be much help for Ashley since I just started my attempts in food photography few weeks ago, definetely not as easy as it looks, my main challengers apart from the photography aspect is actually preperation.

Following is an interesting link for the once who have not seen it
http://www.foodportfolio.com/blog/ scroll down for various articles

I would also recommend this book on food preperation, lots of info and trick (although you may not be able to eat anything lol)

Big companies will go to advertising agencies. Small restaurants will use yellowpages, craigslist and google to find their food photographers. So ranking for Toronto food photographer or something like that is a bonus.
Bus seriously, a lot of small restaurants these days do their own pictures. I know a few owners and they always do their menus with a PS cameras and those don't look bad. I would go ahead and say it's not possible to make a living in food photography alone.
