Looking to rent an L lens for an upcoming wedding shoot.. and I was wondering what popular opinion would be

the body is a 40D,
with a Rebel XT as a back-up/second with a 50mm 1.8 on it

Canon EF24-70/2.8 L USM Lens

Canon EF28-70/2.8 L USM Lens

Canon EF70-200/2.8 L IS USM Lens

You need an poll option to pick 2 lens

I think if you search this forum and others, that the general consensus is

1 body - 24-70
1 body - 70-200

with maybe the 50mm in your pocket as an extra

I agree. 24-70 and 70-200 with both get a good workout at any full-day wedding (chapel, formals and reception).

If I had to choose one it would be the 24-70 but the trade-off will be that you'll literally be in people's faces during the ceremony.

If you had to pick only ONE lens, I'd say the 24-70 to give yourself a decent range of wide to 3/4 type shots. BUT ideal would be the 24-70 and 70-200 on separate bodies which is my typical combo. The 24-70 gets swapped out every so often for a 16-35mm. I've done weddings with a single body (secondary photographer) in the past and it's a pain and not to mention the missed shots while swapping lenses. Things happen fast! Good luck!

I shot a friend's wedding using a 24-70 on FF, and a 70-200 on crop, and external flashes on both.

LOL, sounds like the setup I use. 5D MK II with the 24-70 and the 70-200 on my 1D MKIII. :)

Does it have to be an 'L' lens? I had the 28-70/2.8L and the 17-55/2.8 IS. The 28-70 sat in a drawer, but the 17-55 was on one of my 40D's almost the entire wedding. The other 40D would usually have the 135/2L or the Sigma 30/1.4. But the 17-55 is definitely the workhorse in my kit.

There are long-term issues with the 17-55mm which is a caveat if you intend to own the lens, but not really a problem worth mentioning if you are renting it from a reputable source for one wedding.
