That is old skool - way before my time on Flickr.

Although when Rob mentioned rogers @home/excite above, it brought me back to Rogers Internet 1.0 which was call Rogers Wave. My orginal Rogers internet account was name@home.com throught that service. I found the manual for this on the weekend as I am moving and cleaning up junk - too funny.

Rogers' monkey business with various providers has had be change my email address twice before, since back whenever it was in the '90s that I first started using them. At least this time around I won't get screwed over, having to tell all of my contacts that I've "moved."

Do you want hosting or the community. There's quite a number of similar hosting options. But the community is what makes Flickr valuable and it's worth staying there despite Rogers' shenanigans.

I actually think that it's Yahoo's shenanigans. It's lost revenue stream if they give it away for nothing, and times are tough.

Yahoo was never giving it away for free. Rogers was paying for it before and is no longer.

Before I joined Rogers I think they provided web space for people to build a personal web page and post photos - I understand that went away when they signed a deal with Flickr. Now we have nothing.

No, I still have my personal web space. They moved it to Geocities when they hooked up with Yahoo. I don't know if they still provide a Geocities account, but at the time they grandfathered the ad free space that we were originally given (a lousy 20meg).

Geocities is in the process of shutting down. Come Oct 26, it's history.

Since Ted died, Rogers has been a real Scrooge with how it's been doing business. Rogers did not even offer free Canadian long distance to their home phone customers this year on Canada Day.

It's only a matter of time before Rogers offshore's it's customer service department as well as tech support. Also you'll now have to pay about $3 (I think that's the amount) if you want to receive a paper invoice.

Text messages also went up to $0.15 each. They're forcing people to buy text plans.

Most if not all carriers now charge 15 cents for each text message. Bell started this a while ago, and it was sooner or later that Rogers would do the same.

At these rates it's cheaper to call someone as you need at least 2 msgs and both parties get hit.

just upgraded to a pro account.... done.

I can't really get upset for Rogers dropping the flickr pro account, as I never really expected it in the first place. It was a nice bonus while it lasted.

Personally to me, it's the whole erosion of services in general, but applicable to all carriers. Lack of real competition in Canada, but at the same time, Rogers recently offered me a free HD PVR if I sign up with their digital TV, thanks but I'll pass, while I had to fight with Bell to get a significant discount off my TV services.

Meanwhile, various ISPs and players in the industry have a meeting with the CRTC this week regarding the throttling that ISPs have implemented. I doubt anything will come out of that.

Here's the funny thing .. we have a lot of Roger's services at home, and my wife always had digital cable. I had never had it in the past, and never really saw the point of it, because I barely watch real tv anyhow - we mostly watch DVD's at home 90% of the time. So I said, why don't we switch back to regular cable, and save money.

Well, we called, and because of all the things we have - internet, my wife's cell phone, and digital cable, its considered a bundle, and we actually get a big discount. If we dropped the digital cable and went for regular cable, it would no longer be considered a bundle -- we we'd actually be paying more money for all three services that we presently do.

That makes no sense to me! But that's the way it is.

Looks like I'll be moving over the SmugMug - mainly because I was having issues with Flickr and wrote their support people on June 28th. I haven't heard anything back and I did check in and ask if they were intending to resolve my issues. On the other hand, when I had some problems with SmugMug during my trial period, I found their support people to be very helpful - and prompt. So I'll keep my free Flickr account and put most of my photos on SmugMug.

That's exactly what I did last Oct., Elaine. I got a SmugMug account and never looked back. I like that I can customize my site and use my own domain name too. I have a "Power User" account and may upgrade to "Pro" at my next renewal. I also like their Dgrin community. Very helpful and good topics there in general. I hadn't added any photos on Flickr for well over a year...
