the good thing is you keep your catalogue intact and by default it renders your old tweaks, then if you want you can upgrade them to the new algorithm, but you can always go back

Sweet, and only $80 for the upgrade?!
I shall investigate this soon!

Damn, lack of ACR 7 kills me. I really like the new LR process, but inability to communicate with PS straight from LR sucks for now

whoever has LR4, does it render RAWs the same as how it looks in camera?

Playing with it a little more it looks like I spoke too soon - even though the performance is much better than the beta I am founding it is quite a bit slower than LR3, especially when using the adjustment brush and other more cpu/memory intensive tools. Looks like I will have to upgrade my system to make it run more smoothly. Looks like many others are also complaining about the performance hit.

It's a bit slower compared to 3.6. Rendering is way better than old versions, everything is smoother and look much better. I guess the new ACR algorithm is working. It's like my crop sensor suddenly became full frame... I also love the way the controls are now and the flexibility they allow for. I think you should only wait if your computer is super slow. Otherwise it will only get slightly better in terms of performance enhancement, judging by previous LR update behavior. By the way, it's fully integrated with PS just need to use "use Lightroom rendering"

I don't think your system upgrade is the case here. I've built a very powerful setup, however it seems a bit sluggish too. I assume it is the same case as with LR3 when it came out. There was a performance update later, which helped quite a bit

Hopefully that is the case PE cuz my computer performs well otherwise. Yeah, I agree I wouldn't hold off on upgrading since the benefits outway the drawbacks.

I haven't done anything since I installed it two weeks ago. :p
Might have to up to 16+ GB RAM. ACK!

Using the 30 day trial version of LR4 - it is slower than LR 3.6 and I am running on an i7 SB CPU - P67 MB - 16 GB - GT450 video - duo monitor system, not the latest and greatest but not exactly a slow system either.

There are some raw images that look different on screen in the develop module compared to the fully rendering jpg version - not all of them just some select images - I haven't figured out why that is...

Think I will wait for 4.1 before purchasing the upgrade.

It turns out that I might get a free upgrade from 3 to 4 as Adobe has a 30day free update policy on new software. I brought ver 3 on sale from b&H feb 15.

Doesn't appear to be a memory or cpu limitation.

Crud. Well I'm sure it's being looked at by Adobe and will be addressed shortly with a patch. Does the price of the upgrade go up after March 31st?

In case anyone doesnt know, here's something you need to consider prior to upgrading: LR4 dropped support for windows XP. I had to dust off my windows 7 license and "upgrade" to use the new lightroom.

Worked out okay because I've been using 32bit version of XP and therefore was limited to 3.2GB of memory..

Adobe just gave me a free upgrade and crappy technology just gave me an expensive upgrade in the form of forcing me to buy a new computer so I'm happy.

So your 'free' upgrade only cost you $1000?

Whats free worth if it doesn't cause some pain and suffering. But I'm not sure I can blame malfunctioning hardware on adobe.

So what PC are you getting to run LR4? I heard you need a rocket ship to run it.

Most likely I wait to load Ver 4 until the bugs are fixed. I'm fine with ver 3. My new computer is just an Acer quad core with 12 gig of ram. Speed tests show it's fast except for 2d graphics where it's just average. For some reason the 3d graphics are very fast considering it has a built in graphic set. I'm not sure it matters unless you are into games. Added two esata output ports surprised how well the hot swapable HD docking stations work. Pretty Rube Goldberg having naked Hard Drives plugged into them.

I have two nekked drives sitting in an USB/SATA hard drive dock on one of my boxes. 'Nekkid' is KOOL!

I'm finding esata is over 250% faster then USB 2.0. I haven't tried my usb 3.0 ports could be faster but I doubt it because of the protocol conversion at each end when you use sata drives.

No doubt the eSata drives and interface is fast. In my application, it is just for content so USB 2.0 is plenty fast enough.

I've been using LR4 for since the day it came out. Can't say I'm either happy or annoyed at it. It feels a little slower the LR3 on my new PC (i5 2500k, 16GB Ram, SSD app's, spinner for data). I find that it zero'ed out my LR 3 catalog and all of my D700 imports go in zero'ed but that's about it. Honestly, I'm not great LR guru so can't tell if it's better or worse and so far seems about the same.

I'm thinking I would have been better off staying on 3 and saving the $$. Maybe it'll be sped up through patches similar to how LR3 was.

Personally I'm finding LR4 significantly faster than LR3, but that's because they finally fixed the spot brush so it doesn't periodically chew CPU for a couple minutes when spotting large files. Aside from that performance is pretty much identical to LR3 on my machine (I5-2500K, 16GB, non-SSD drives)
