the 40D is a D sensor yes?
If so, we cannot forget the tiny little detail that a 17mm becomes 25mm, 70mm becomes 115mm and 200 becomes 300mm.

Yes, a 40D is a crop (1.6x) sensor so a 17-55 becomes 28-80 roughly.

I'm having a similar dilemma. For my 7D, I have a 70-200L 2.8 IS but I'm wondering about a second lens.

I have a EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS but there seems to be a noticeable difference in quality between this lens and my 70-200L. I would like to be able to shoot in tighter spaces and take some wider shots but I can't do that with the 70-200L.

Should I stick with my EF-S 18-55mm or consider another lens? Another problem is that the zoom ring seems to be stuck on this lens and I haven't taken it in to repair yet so I'm stuck at 55mm! Worth fixing or should I consider something else? Everyone says the 27-70L glass is amazing but pricy too! (and no IS).

You may be happy with the 15-85 - I have heard good things about it.
