Ah, OK, I see but the fine art printing industry operates under the same rule. Although you're not necessarily dealing with "dots" as in the printing industry but pixels are still pixels. The resolution of 300ppi is still required for a decent, sharp, detailed image.

It depends too on the substrate. I've enlarged 3mp images up to 30x20 but only print this size on canvas. Thanks to the rough surface, I can get away with uprezzing a small image to this size. However, if I was to do a photographic print (continuous tone with a matte or glossy finish) I could only push this 3mp image to a 9x12 depending on how sharp it was originally.

If it wasn't sharp when I shot the image, then 8x10 would be the largest I would go.
