I agree, Canada need more competition and I think supporting smaller provider is important, especially one like Teksavvy wich is very involved in the fight against the big ones (just check their forum on dslreport).

Sure they don't own the lines for now, but maybe some day they will be able start to build their own network, starting in the big cities.
This is what happened in France, where it is to be a monopoly, now the market is very dynamic. But this was possible only because the governement had regulated the market, forcing the big providers to be more expensive than the emerging ones, allowing them to be competitive enough.

Unfortunately I can't see this happening here in Canada (and US) where "regulation" is like a very bad word ... especially with the current governement.

Competition will help.

Meanwhile I shouldn't be complaining as for some odd reason my flickr pro expires May 2010 as I just noticed that now! :D

Interesting. The email I received from Rogers says my Flickr Pro account will change to the free account on July 1, 2009. But I logged on to my flickr account and the message on the main page says January 1, 2012 (that's in 960 days).

Image

i got similar notice.....mine is 'due' until next year.

But that maybe because i paid for 1 yr service, then i merge the free flickrPRO. Have you paid for PRO account previously?

Where do you find that out? I just checked my flickr account, I found this : "You have a Pro account, at no cost as long as you keep your Yahoo! service. "

I didn't receive any email from Rogers about this yet, hope they forgot about me :D I did get an email from them about changing the bundle discount to a tiered bundle discount, basically now you need to have 4 things with them to get a 15% off, it used to be 15% off if you have 3 Rogers things, now you get only 10% off for 3. They are really peesing me off now. Bell starts to look better and better.

I switched from Bell to Rogers about two years ago. My upload and download speeds were painfully slow and Bell was unable to remedy the problem. I have had no complaints with Rogers - so far :D

As for Flickr - I'll weigh my options.

I contacted Rogers about this and here was their reply:

Thank you for your email.

We understand your concerns. Our agreement with Yahoo! to offer Flickr Pro to all our customers has changed and we can no longer offer the Pro version for free. But our customers will continue to receive a free Flickr account with many of the same features as Pro, but is subject to some limitation. At Rogers we regularly evaluate the services we offer to our customers and are continuing to invest in our network in order to provide customers with the fastest and most reliable service. For further information, please see our FAQ's below:

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Why is Rogers making this change?
A: Our agreement with Yahoo! to offer Flickr Pro to all our customers has changed and we can no longer offer the Pro version for free. Our customers will continue to receive a free Flickr account with many of the same features as Pro as of July 1st.

Q: What happens to customers who have more than 200 photos on Flickr Pro?
A: In free Flickr customers will only have access to a maximum of 200 most recent photos. To access their earlier pictures after July 1, they will have to either remove some of their images or purchase a Pro membership.

Q: Will Rogers delete images if users don't have time to make the change?
A: Rogers will transition your photos to the new service on July 1st.
Only those users with more than 200 photos and wish to access their earlier pictures, will need to take action by either removing some images or considering a Flickr Pro membership. The official Flickr retention policy is that accounts that are not accessed for 90 days risk photo deletion.

Q: Can customers upgrade to Flickr Pro?
A: Yes. They can upgrade to Flickr Pro for $24.95 USD/year. If a customer upgrades to Flickr Pro before September 1, 2009 they can get an additional 2-months of the service free. The links to purchase are within the email notification and on the Flickr home page. The Flickr Pro service is billed directly by Yahoo! and requires a valid credit card or Paypal account.

If you have any further questions or comments regarding our service, please fill out the online form on our Customer Support page listed below or contact us by phone at 1-888-288-4663.

Poo on you Rogers.

Guess I'll just pipe in here with the de rigeur usual negative comments about Rogers. I am getting less service from them. Yet, rates never go down. One day I'd like to be so stinkin' rich that I could buy a controlling interest in Rogers and change their name to what they really should be called:
"The Fricken' Cable Company" - or something to that extent.

Yes, as opposed to the "FLICKRing Cable Company"

Ah crap!! Stupid me. I procrastinated too long. The deadline passed and my Flickr account 'expired' and is pared down to 200 shots.

I'm thinking I should re-new it, though I was considering Zenfolio as I feel it displays my photos better and is more customizable. Flickr adds a bit more sharpening which I don't need. But I was liking the Flickriver stream. makes it easy for the viewer to go through a set without endless clicking. But Zenfolio

Thanks.

What I want to know is if the comments on the 1000's of UNdisplayed photos will also show up IF I renew my membership.

I signed up on Jul 1/2009 and could not decouple (technical glitch on Flickr) my Rogers e-mail account. I also did not get the two months extra on the account that people got prior to Jul 1/2009 sign-up.
Solution: I e-mailed support and they replied very quickly and helped me decouple the Rogers account AND they gave me two additional free months.

Sorry, what do you mean by this? What is decoupling and why is this desirable?

From the account page: http://www.flickr.com/account/, when you go to http://www.flickr.com/account/transfer/, mine was tied to my Rogers e-mail and when I tried to select "Use an existing Yahoo ID" it would not do anything.

By e-mailing Flickr support, I could tie it back into my Rocketmail Yahoo account as Flickr requires an underlying Yahoo e-mail account as a login.

Interesting. I contacted Flickr support on June 28th because I was having problems too. I got a stock answer saying they were assigning it to a senior rep and I have heard nothing back from them. It looks like I will be going with SmugMug and I'll just keep a free account with Flickr. SmugMug's support is a lot better.

Here is the e-mail I received:
Hello James,

I removed "My_Name_Here@rogers.com" from your Flickr
account and you will receive the log in instruction in your
rocketmail address.

I also added the two extra months back to your account.

We apologize for the confusion this problem might have
caused you.

Regards,
Emily

Thousand thanks for the replies thus far....
So one MUST open a Yahoo related e-mail address in order to continue with Flickr?

I cannot keep it associated with the Rogers account?

Not sure about this one. I opened my Flickr account without knowing that Rogers offered free Flickr accounts, so I got the cheesy Rocketmail account to open the Flickr account. I am migrating away from Rogers to Teksavvy so I am making sure anything that is tied to a Rogers account is toast.
Yahoo provides mail service for Rogers and that is why they allowed this in the past but Rogers may switch at some point which would leave you exposed. By having the Yahoo account, you have a direct relationship with Yahoo/Flickr (and soon to be Microsoft - just kidding).

As a result of the above scenario [and other similar ones], I now have more e-mail accounts than Kellogg's has Corn Flakes...

Hmm.. I think it's okay to keep using your Rogers email. As soon as the ir Rogers/Yahoo contract is up, Rogers won't have anything to do with Flickr. As long as your email address works, you can still use it for Flickr.

Sure, you can still use it for now but Flickr requires a Yahoo login ID and while Rogers is still associated with Yahoo for mail services, they may not be in the future.

In my case I am moving away from Rogers so I needed to use the Yahoo ID so I didn't lock myself out of my Flickr account.

There's definitely precedent for that. Rogers used to be associated with Excite way back; that whole Rogers@Home thing. They split from that when Excite's service was going in the dumper and started handling everything internally, then hooked up with Yahoo later on.

I was using my Rogers account with flickr even before they offered the free pro account.

Right, because Rogers uses Yahoo as an e-mail providor. If that agreement ever ends and it may, then your Rogers account would no longer work with any Yahoo type services.

That is old skool - way before my time on Flickr.

Although when Rob mentioned rogers @home/excite above, it brought me back to Rogers Internet 1.0 which was call Rogers Wave. My orginal Rogers internet account was name@home.com throught that service. I found the manual for this on the weekend as I am moving and cleaning up junk - too funny.

Back when I was living in Burlington, which would have been 11-12 years ago, I was using the Cogeco Wave, recall that @home account also. Plus the space for a personal website which they managed to forget to put a limit on storage. :)

Hmmm I see.. I've added my own personal email as the primary email for Yahoo. Hopefully they'll use that automatically even if they take away the Rogers email.
