I'm glad i dont shoot wildlife because i'd probably give up after seeing that display of sheer awesomeness. I'd hang any one of those pictures on my wall. :D

That looks very much like IR to me. That type of tone doesn't come very easily to natural light I find.

I have his book, A Shadow Falls, which sits on my coffee table. Not only are his images amazing but his book also speaks about the plight of these animals in Africa.

I'd recommend that book to anyone!

I was reading he uses a lot of nd grads for the sky and red filters to get em dark and apparently he takes his lens off slightly tilting to get that strange dof

Taking your lens off slightly, in the dirty and dusty conditions? He's got guts as well as talent!

Makes sense though, i was wondering how he got the unusual dof or whether it was post-work.

Gorgeous stuff indeed.

I looked him up on Chapters. Shadow Falls and On This Earth are both available.

I just ordered both from Chapters online. I can't believe how much Amazon charge for the Shadow Falls... they are thieves!

LOL, yeah I noticed that a couple mins ago when I was checking it out. Hit and miss. Sometimes Amazon has better pricing on the same book than Chapters and vice versa. Other tiimes one carries a book the other doesn't. I had to pay $13. to ship a used $2.95 book because Chapters/Indigo doesn't carry it. ARGH!

Did u guys see the "Abandoned Ostrich Egg" photo? so simple, but dang, so good! do u guys think it was set up? or was the egg really just laying down there?

hard to tell. It's not like there are that many other features around it that would hint that he placed it in an awesome spot (like in a tiger's mouth or something like that). Just a flat dry ground and the far away hills. it could easily have been left there and he just shot it with some flash.

Darn, now i have to go to Chapters at lunch to see if they have any of his books. And then book a trip to Africa! LOL

A very interesting thread about how Nick Brandt did it. Especially the answer directly from Nick himself.

well i think this thread had peaked interest because i've been to a couple INdigo/CHapters and his name was left on the search page on the terminals and his books are sold out, except one at the Eaton Center and it was it beat up.

You're better off to buy it online anyway - 34% off. Free shipping on orders over $39.

And you get additional discount if you are an iReward member :) and free shipping if the order is above certain amount (I think it is $36 or something) I sound like a commercial, am I not!

For my order, the "On this earth" was shipped on Thursday but the "a Shadow Falls" is back ordered for a couple of weeks.

ARGH! I am very familiar with his work. It touches me like few other photographer's work does. One minute his work makes me feel impotent, insignificant, useless and makes me question my continued pursuit of wildlife photography - and another minute it inspires and pushes me to better my craft.

I tried to order A Shadow Falls but it's sold out and no longer on sale. I was waiting for my sis to get back to me on a book she wanted to order to get free shipping with my order. In the end, I lost out because she took too long getting back to me. Moral of the story is look out for no.1 first and family CAN screw you over! ARGH!

If you still really want a copy of Shadow Falls and happen to be west of Toronto according to chapters.ca the Burlington Chapters has a copy and the Ancaster Chapters (just off the Link) apparently has two. Of course it is full cover price in store. Ouch.

Was it on sale still? I ended up just getting the On This Earth copy. Thanks for the heads up.
