Hi, does anyone have any tips for shooting through a glass-bottomed boat? Maureen, I saw you mentioned awhile back the glass-bottom boat up Tobermory way, you probably did take that tour, but did look away from the lighthouses long enough to shoot between your feet? Janet

I haven't done it, but it strikes me that your best bet would be to use a polarizing filter to reduce any reflections from the glass bottom of the boat.

How about taking a black sheet to throw over yourself when you are shooting to prevent any reflections from topside.

While the polarizing filter may reduce glass reflection.... It will also greatly reduce the light coming intomthe camera. How dark is the inside of the boat?

How about a rubber lens hood? That's what some shooters use to shoot thru glass in a hockey rink.

Janet the glass bottom on the boat in Tobermory was fairly small and also had sides / walls around it so you could not get close to the floor. It was also under cover of the roof. It was sheltered from the sunlight and the view was pretty good.

I chose to actually shoot the boat under water from outside with the polarizer on the lens to avoid the water glare. The view was cool but yes I was actually expecting that at least half of the boats floor would have been glass rather than a 4' x 4' square or so. Everyone was crowding in trying to see and you got bumped a lot. After awhile no one was looking and I think I took a few shots. It only gave you a very small view of the boat under the water. It was a clearer view without the water glare, but you could not get the vastness of the boat from there. I liked the wider angle view of underwater from the side of the boat better.

Had it been a bigger floor it probably would have been better but a lot of feet to contend with too, and the sunlight might have affected things too with the glass.

Luckily there were no lighthouses to shoot in the bay while we were shooting the underwater boat.

Can see the small thumb nail on the page but link to image still says it is private. You likely need to change some settings in flicker for this.

How was the trip anyways.
