Wish that I'd known that when you sold me your OM2000 and 50mm F1.8

Hell, quibbling over a few bucks is pointless. I want it, or I don't. I'm willing to pay the price, or I'm not. I'm not shopping in a Shanghai fish market.

A little off topic but I love it when I see an ad on CL that says "great lens" or "beautiful camera" and it's some old crappy Tokina AF lens.

Holy old thread Batman! lol

Yeah that's when you tell the guy you'll buy the D300+2 lens and sell the body to him separately for $500.. he's gotta pay you first and then you'll go get the kit for an extra $50 bucks and then you'll deliver the D300 body later. ;)

How about putting a statement in your ad, "Lowballers will be signed up for as much internet spam as I can possibly find. Try me."

I did say lowballers will be ignored. He replied to the ad with a phone number to call back. All this was through the phone. He even argued that it should be cheaper since its a discontinued item..blah blah blah.

oh well, moving on.

I've marked so many lowballers as spam during my recent sale from CL and kijiji..

would like to see their reactions when they know they got black list from the sites...

One time, my buddy was selling an iPhone 4, some guy offered him something crazy like $250 at the time they were going for 5 or 6. He told him he's stuck in Barrie and that he needed the money to fix his car. The dude said, sorry all I have is $250. So he made this lowballer drive all the way up to Barrie before telling him to piss off. Harsh.

This reminds me of my first trip to the market in Mississauga in 2000. In Romania you never pay the price that they ask, at the market. At least that was the case when I left.
So when I offered the farmer a lower price than he asked, I did not understand why he was giving me such a long look...
Another culture shock to my already bruised ego...
Just an FYI, now I just pay and go and keep being surprised (and grateful) why someone is still willing to make a living as a farmer...

Another email a couple days later: "20"
I replied: "10"

This increase in low-balling which I have experienced as well is due to a lot of used gear in classifieds of all sorts, so people sense the desperation to sell by others and low-ball.

In my case I had posted a camera for $300, the low-baller asked for $250, I agreed. When I went to meet him, he looked at the camera and said it looks really used and there is a scratch in the LCD screen so $200 or no sale... I agreed. For one the camera was out-dated by now, it was heavily used and even if there was no scratch in the screen I knew $200 was a fair price for it. I also knew if I lost this chance, it would very unlikely to sell this camera in the future... So, while the guy might have felt smug that he low-balled someone, in fact he bought an out-dated and heavily used camera for $200.

See an ad on cl. I email agree to the price to buy thier item, and then they try to round up to the nearest 10 dollars?! Huh? Makes me wantto low ball, instead of simply agreeing to the asking price. Geez

What's with the expectation that prices of equipment should garner the same price or better on the used market?

Example:
http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/drh/pho/2642673882.html

I've bought the same lens, no more than a month and a half ago from Merkle Camera for $1600+ taxes in.

People have their heads in the clouds sometimes and need to be brought back down to earth.

Cheers,
Dave

I think the point is this thread is...offering the seller $1300 would be unrealistic for what you just admittedly paid $1600 for??

...Or are you hijacking and starting a highballer thread?

We should start a new rants section about high baller sellers lol

I think the point is this thread is...offering the seller $1000 would be unrealistic for what you just admittedly paid $1600 for??

...Or are you starting a highballer thread?

double post

..I'm stickin' with $1000.

Whatever the #*&$ you just bought from Merkel for $1600 I'm sure can be sold for $1000 within seconds.

This may be true (the gist of your post that is, I'll ignore the unnecessary expletive suggested) however, if, as a seller, you expect an unrealistic price, then even asking the "going" price becomes "lowballing".

Hence my example posted above.

But let's assume another: You want to sell a camera that, for all intents and purposes, has been shown to be worth, based on current trends, pricing etc. $100. You decide that you want to sell it for $300. Someone comes along and offers you $100 because they too have done the research. Suddenly the "going price" (i.e. the money being offered to you and is in line with current trends etc.) to you has become lowballing.

Dave
