Does anyone know when the salmon run happens? I heard you can see the salmon in Rouge River and Credit river. Is it true?

I saw them in the Humber river too - behind Old Mill - Oct 1st in 2006 (wow - it feels like last year!).

If you're in the east end of the city, I recomment Highland Creek. You'll see them better there as it's shallower than the Rouge. You can stand right in the creek and have them swim through your legs.

But not as dramatic as Stacey's shot.

If I remember correctly that's where I watched them as a kid... I recall seeing them in Streetsville as well.

If you come across the city on the 401 and get off at Morningside, go south to Kingston Road and east to Colonel Danforth Park. This is just past the bridge over Highland Creek. Keep right and circle around and go down the hill.
Park at the very back of the main parking lot and you can walk down the path right next to the creek. You will see them jumping, swimming etc.
There are no falls, but the water is fairly shallow and they are splashing a lot as they try to make their way upstream.
We go every year.... nice day for a walk and the salmon too!!

A good place in Mississauga to see them is at Erindale park. The entrance is off of Dundas just East of Mississauga Rd. on the east side of the Credit river. You can walk for quite a distance along the river. I haven't been down there for a couple of years now but there were quite a few people fishing as well. If one has a fish on the hook you could get some great shots of them jumping.

If the place isn't too crowded you may even see some ducks. It is quite a nice place for photography even if you don't see any salmon.

Terry.

Interesting thread. I had no idea that there were fresh water salmon in that great big lake.

Today, September 25...

Following Tim's directions above to Colonel Danforth Park.

I didn't see any salmon running up (or down) the river where the river is shallow.

But, there's a deeper pool near the beginning of the foot path at the end of the parking lot. There were people fishing there, and in the 15 minutes I was there, they caught 3 huge salmon.

There's also a blue kingfisher (?) flying around waiting to be photographed.

Yc

Crud. For the life of me I can't recall a location I went to when I was doing resource engineering some 12yrs ago. We did a stream/site study out in Whitby area. Parked on the side of the road and about a 10min walk upstream, there was a fish ladder and the salmon were jumping like crazy. If I remember, I'll post it but might be too late by the time I remember. :p
