Hi All,

I will be spending the long weekend in Ottawa.
Can anyone recommend some interestings spots apart from the obvious ones like the Parliament building or 24 Sussex Dr?

Thank you,
Radu

The view of the parliament buildings from the Hull side is rather good and one that is less often seen.

You've also got the cenotaph, Canadian War Museum, the National Gallery, Museum of Civilization, the riverfront to the west of downtown, and more parks than you'll be able to visit.

lots of good stuff to see.... and not sure if you are mobile - but its definately worth a side trip to Almonte.... there are 5 millsl all within walking distance. Also Manotick to see Watson's mill. Plus there are a few other mills on the way up highway 426 - Spencerville, and others.

The renovations at the Museum of Nature are finally finished, the new space could be interesting to shoot

Theres also the Hostel Jail in all its creepiness

If you do go to the War Museum, I recommend going to the teraformed top its kinda cool and a affords a good view of the city, plus the garden in the back by the river is pretty,

There are always the locks by Chateau Laurier too, lots of tunnels and old masonry

The staircase by the American Embassy is a cool shot of the market, the embassy itself is an eyesore

Oh and the view from Nepean point (beside and behind the National Gallery) is great

And if Inuk Shuks are your thing, along the Ottawa River parkway bike path there is a point where artist John Ceprano creates a new batch of them every year

The tulip festival is still on, but about 1/2 the tulips have already wilted... everything was very early this year.

The old locks on the Rideau Canal itself are interesting. Museum of Civ is nice, especially at dusk, and you'll have a better look at the Parliament buildings from that side.

There's lots of old buildings everywhere, and lots of embassies.

What do you like to shoot?

Oh, and if you're driving up, try to make some time in the area south of Calabogie to shoot. There are a lot of places along the rivers that have a very Group of Seven sort of feel to them. I've always been coming or going, on a schedule, and haven't had the chance to shoot.

The Museum of Civilization is photogenic. Interesting building with many curves and fountain that can garner interesting patterns on a bright sunny day - not so much when it is overcast.

thank you for all your suggestions.
As it turns out, my trip to Ottawa has been something like this:

Sorry to read that.

i would have recommended a tour of the Parliament. yes it sounds tacky and touristy but after living in Europe it was nice to be in a building that was older than my great-great-grandparents.

I did that last time I visited Ottawa, not too long ago. The parliament was on vacation so we got the extended tour.
