I was asked about doing a 'portrait stand' at a party. I am not sure how to respond, especially since I don't know what a portrait stand is!

It sounds like setting up a studio-like area to take (somewhat) formal portraits of guests. Am I on the right track? Please help me understand. Thanks.

I do something like that all the time, a little backdrop two lights... get every one to say 'wiskey' or 'cristmas tree' run off 3 shots. print the one where everyone isnt blinking & smiling. stick it in a paper frame/mat and hand it out at the end of the night.

presto money in your pocket :D

Thanks for your help - I'll get back to them. I'll do a dry run or two in my house and practice before the event.

I was at an engagement party with a 'portrait stand'. This guy set up a backdrop and just took pics with his speedlite. Didn't set up any additional lights. One thing he did have was a box full of cards that had various expressions/poses on it, so you get the guest to pull a card and make the expression.
Looking back at the pictures they were pretty poor. But everyone seemed happy.

my friend did that for his engagement party too, i think he had 2-3 lights. they were mostly not focused perfectly, but the shots were pretty funny and in a few years time would be pretty memorable.

I've done the photo stand bit as well -- but the images were for the client of the party, and they took care of the printing. Actually -- they put them up in a slideshow the next morning on a slideshow at the breakfast meeting. Whatever - - it was all good for me, as I made a few extra hundred bucks, when I was already making money as the lighting designer for the gig.
