So I punched the button on this pretty sweet portfolio I got at deserres.. Its aluminum .. I initially bought it so I could engrave my initials onto it so I took it to the key place and its slightly too big for there machine.. I contacted hi tech tattoos and apparently that cant etch onto it becuase of the finish onto it .... So my question is am I out of luck? I need it done by the 12th of January does anyone have any ideas?? I could technically buy a plate and get it engraved and glue it on but I would prefer having it engraved on the origional ...

Heres the link to the porftolio I bought size also

34338 Machina 14x11 Presentation Book 14.5 x 12.75 x .75

On the site they can engrave it but I assume I have to send it to the states and I need it done for my interview (Jan 12th)

Thanks ahead of time!

Tyler

How about some of the trophy engraving places?

There's Toronto Engraving on 211 Yonge St., D&G Trophies on O'Connor Drive or look up engraving in the Yellow Pages.

apparently the laser etching cant be done? heres the email from hitech tattoos whol do laser etching "Hi Tyler,

We tried etching those portfolios in the past and it didn’t work. They have a strong satin finish, I guess to make them somewhat scratch proof, so the laser has problems adhering to it. We’ve etched other types of portfolios, in different materials, but yours didn’t work.

What we’ve done to another person that wanted to etch that portfolio, was to etch a business card size piece of aluminum and he just glues it to the portfolio.

Let me know if you would be interested in this solution.

Thanks,

Bruno Mackay

Have you tried Toronto Stamp?
http://www.torstamp.com/signs.html

I don't know if they do what you want but they can do etched and engraved signs in large sizes.

I can't recommend them since I have never had work done there, but I used to know one of the owners and he's a good guy.

yes, a stamp and sign shop is probably your best source.

"Satin finish" aluminum is a clear anodize. This poses problems for some laser cutters as it may reflect the beam, a bad situation.

Other possibility is a machine shop that is willing to engrave your type. This can be done from a graphics file converted to DXF; or more simply a drawing showing what you want as they may prefer to use machine specific embedded fonts for smooth cutting.

You will still face difficulties due to the hinge assembly. If you can pull out the hinge pin and just take the front cover you will have greater success. Explain to sign-stamp or machine shop exactly that it's a hinged book cover with piano-type formed hinge knuckles.
