I went and bought a portfolio folder with slip in sheets for my photos as a portfolio to present them in (Humber) someone told me they also (Humber) judges how your presenting your photos aswell .. So I could go normal with just the porftolio book but I want it to stand out! .. Does anyone have any idea or suggestions they would care to share that may make it stand out?.. I think the book I have is nice but very plain.. hmmmm

What kind of portfolio is it? Commercial photographers spend $1,000+ on portfolio cases to stand out. It's not easy to find a good portfolio in Toronto. When I was using one, I couldn't find any in Toronto. Spent weeks and had to buy online. Try Itoya leather portfolios. Won't make you stand out,but better than what I saw in photo/craft stores in Toronto.
Other than that, I don't think you need anything special to stand out. Your photos must do the talking for you. Your energy should be spent on choosing the images that you'll be including in your portfolio.
Less is more. Rather show 10 excellent images than 15 images that have a mix of 10 excellent+5 so so. You're always being judged by your worst photo.

Have some nice 8x10 prints with a clean white border in a portfolio box. Something clean, simple and professional.

Do not use loose individual pages.

Any bound portfolio book is fine. Best if it will lie flat when open.

All pages same size. Helps if all pages have similar layout or otherwise coordinated design.

If you have the time and money, one of these vanity printers doing one- or two-off custom print and bound books is absolute best.

Many people show up with portfolio of loose pages, different sizes and colours, some mounted on board. In interview they search through - it was here yesterday - spraying loose pages all over table, fall to floor. It's a disaster.

Personally, I prefer medium size prints, mounted on matboard, and presented in a nice presentation box when people approach our gallery to exhibit. It gives me an opportunity to spread the images out, and arrange them into an exhibition... see relationships between images... see which ones don't stand out or fit in.

However, if there are specific presentation guidelines that are expected or recommended, always go with those.
