So I was messing around today and put on a friends 180mm 2.8 g lens on a d90 and it wasnt reading/metering it .. Do the older lenses work on the bodies? or do you loose metering and camera adjusting aperture??

can't remember how the format works but this chart should help you figure out if an older lens will meter / focus on your camera.

The aperture should be locked at f22 and controlled via the body. Is it the 180 f2.8/D? If it is, it should work with that body.

ditto -- make sure the aperature is set to f/22 and locked off. Otherwise it should work. The D90 does not meter manual focus lenses.

I don't recall there was ever a 180mm 2.8G lens,

here is a link from Ken Rockwell of all 180mm lens

http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/180mm-history.htm

Other than the AF, AF-N and AF-D, D90 won't meter / focus automatically

180ED is an Ai-S lens... going back to Delsorbo's link on nikonians.org. It is a manual focus lens. While it is on D90, you can only use it in M mode and you adjust the aperture on the lens itself and the meter in the camera will not work. Also, the front dial is not functional in this case. And yes, the meters will work (to a certain degree, I think P and S mode still doesn't work) on D200 and higher body.
