"The pictures in this feature were removed after questions were raised about whether they had been digitally altered. "

Any idea what that's about? I haven't been able to find any info about why they were taken down.

It's unethical and a huge no-no. The job of the photographer is to capture the scene as it is not to make changes to it so it could be more pleasing to the eye.

Example of a policy and past cases can be viewed here:

what's somewhat galling is that the photog himself said:
"When I photograph I don’t do any post production to the images, either in the darkroom or digitally, because it erodes the process. So I respect the essence of these spaces."

:?: :?: National geographic and fashion magazines have made a career out of re-touching everything.

There's a key difference in these two. Fashion magazines don't adhere to the same policies/standards that news agencies has to.

National Geographic to me fits somewhere between the two as they have had images that were digitally manipulated many of times - but - they do for the most part mention that the image has been altered ever since readers raised the issue to them.

News agencies, and that includes the NY Times, must adhere to strict policies and guidelines on what can be done and what can't be done. The policy is in the above link. Digitally altering images no longer conveys what really happened anymore. In extreme cases, altered images are used for a different agenda or for some other political reason.

The artist responded on JM Colberg's Blog. His replies is kind of pretentious. Edgar Martins: How can I see what I see, until I know what I know?
