All I gotta say is wow! This is gonna take some getting used to. (and I am not talking performance) Canon really did the whole paradigm shift here. Buttons are all in different places compared to the 50D, the entire auto focus system is different.

Right out of the box, the multi controller (joystick) is disabled. If you want to use it to manually select focus points, you have to go into the custom functions to turn it on. I hit the focus point select button and then tried to use the joystick to pick my point, nothing happened. I thought, maybe this camera is defective until I RTFM :D

This is because Canon now has about 5 ways of doing autofocus.
1. Spot AF (just one spot is used for AF)
2. Single point
3. Af Expansion where surrounding points are used
4. Zone based where the points are divided into groups
5. Full 19 point auto

The shutter is loud, kinda reminds me of my 20D with how loud it was :(
View finder is 100% of the FOV and its bright. The camera is fast. Shooting raw with a fast CF card, you can pretty much hold your finger down to shoot at 8 fps in raw. The 1080P video at 24P is stunning (something the 5DMKII cannot do). I didn't get a chance to play with the built in flash controller yet but it certainly looks promising.

Cliff notes, will take some time to get used to, but I see my 1d getting used less and less as I get used to this.

thanks for the recap.

Curios, where did you buy this from? I'm getting mine from Aden pretty soon.

lucky you :D

for more pointers on video (if that's your thing) check out Philip Bloom's stuff, he's done a DVD for 5D and another one coming out for 7D in the nest few weeks.

oh and http://www.dslrnewsshooter.com/ as well.

I had a chance to use one today and....

IT's THE GREATEST THING EVERRRRRR

Its like FINALLY Canon learned from competitors, took the best features from all around, crammed it in to this smaller body.

First I'm with Canon, then I switch to Nikon. I should have waited. Damn 7d.... I only hear great things about this camera. OP Post some sample pictures and/or video.

Thanks... even knowing that, it still took a bit to figure out how to manually select AF.

LOL just wait for next camera from Nikon, I bet it'll resemble a lot of features of 7D + lots more Nikon's ones

Oh, and then Canon 8D, then Nikon again, etc

I haven't processed the pics yet, but the AF is incredible, miles ahead of anything in the XD bodies. I'd say its just as fast as my 1d3.

On my 50d + 70-200 2.8is combo, I'd get af hunting when shooting BIF. The 7D just locks when using auto, or the zone based AF. I didn't get a chance to try the af point expansion or the single AF point. Shots at 3200 ISO seemed perfectly usable.
