I am thinking of getting a full size tripod that folds very compact and is light in weight for backpacking and such.

Anyone have any recommendations?

What is your budget? Are you looking for Arca Swiss plates? I bought a Benro Carbon Travel Angel a few years ago and it is great - 3Lbs and it came with a bag and ballhead. It was $300 on eBay. The newer line from Benro is MeFoto, they carry them at Henry's and are well built too.

+1 for Benro Carbon Travel Angel, I have had mine for 3 years now and it hasn't failed me yet. super strong, super lightweight, and ultra portable.

I was hoping to keep the cost to around $200+, but the $300 isn't unreasonable.

You should look at the MeFoto's at Vistek and you don't need CArbon Fiber - aluminum is way cheaper:

+1 for MeFoto. I got the globetrotter in aluminum and its been great. Super light weight, compact and the ball head that it comes with is pretty decent.

I returned the MeFoto after getting an used Sirui T-005X for $80. It has the same load capacity and weights less.

I use a Manfrotto 190CXPRO4. Very light and compact. I highly recommend it. A little pricey though.

I noticed that DPReview has done up a review on carbon finer travel tripods. See http://www.dpreview.com/articles/535297 ... s-reviewed
