In case you're wondering what an Olympic photographer is packing for the games, Jeff Cable breaks down his gear choices. I have to assume he's not flying Sunwing. Last time they only allowed me ten pounds for my carry-on.

Don't forget that many of these guys do not need to bring a huge amount of gear, because when they arrive.... the major camera brands have pools of equipment to lend out. So for example - a Nikon shooter can go to the NPS outlet, and sign out a 400mm and 600mm lens for their days shooting, depending on what sport they are shooting, and what they need.

nope. photographers bring everything they expect to use from long to widey. while Nikon and Canon have repair/loan depots, it'd be unwise to expect to be able to borrow lenses for the duration of the games. as well, lenses need to be returned before end of each day so no holding onto lenses for a few days and saying you forgot to return it. that act will=no more loaner in many cases.

I know of one Russian press photographer who ordered all his gear from BH Photo a few weeks before the Vancouver games. He didn't have any gear rentals from Canon or his employer. It worked to be cheaper to buy the gear then sell it after than trying to rent it for the 2wks.

I hope he packed a shower curtain, a few light bulbs and some kibble for the stray dogs.

I found an interview with one of the Olympic skating photographers - nothing technical though.
