I finally got the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR I to replace my 80-200mm f/1.8 two-ring AF-D. I was so excited! When I got home I did some low-light comparison tests between the two lenses. My excitement turned to frustration when I found the 80-200 consistently out-performing the 70-200, even with the 70-200 VR turned on.

Shooting manual and all settings being equal (ie 200mm, f/2.8, 1/60th, iso 500), the images coming off the 80-200 are, consistently, at least a stop brighter than the 70-200. The IQ even appears much better with the 80-200. How is that possible?

Although I've found a handful of discussions online comparing the two lenses, I haven't seen any other real-world comparison images between the two lenses to validate my findings. If anyone has any insight regarding these lenses, it would be really helpful. I need to decide which of these puppies to keep.

I'm not directly experienced with these lenses so the following is heresay. While I do not remember reading many comparisons between the 80-200 and the 70-200 I have seen several comparing the VRI to the VRII. I came across this info several times while looking into the D800, a very demanding camera. My understanding is that the 70-200 VRI is not the best performing lens and left a few underwhelmed. The VRII is the lens you want for the best Nikon 70-200 performance.

I have the 80-200 on my D800e and yes it is an awesome lens. much better than the 70-200 VR I. now just as ions has mentioned the 70-200 VR II is awesome and it is far superior to either of the others. but for you actual question i agree that the 80-200 is better than the 70-200 VR I just because it was built and designed much better. the 70-200 VR I was very flawed and thus quickly replaced by the VR II
