So it seems that the short answer here is to get a fast 70-200mm lens AND a more capable body.

I hear a lot of 7d suggestions, but what about the new 70d?
Any thoughts on that body?

70D appears to be a very fine camera, it has been well reviewed so far. It looks particularly good if you use live view frequently. You will hear a lot about the 7D because almost 6 years after its release it is still an amazing camera. That said, the ISO performance is 6 years old and if that is your main concern right now a newer camera, like the 70D, makes more sense.

Oops. I had attempted to do the math in my head. The big numbers threw me off. Regardless, I don't think my bad memory/math removes the point. The 7D is an awesome camera that is starting to show its age in ISO performance.

You should also check Vistek for lens rentals.

Also check out http://www.lenslenders.ca

A bit cheaper than Henry's & Vistek but I haven't rented from them yet so not sure of the quality of the rental equipment.

What about the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD IF Macro SP AF?

Thanks,
Rob.

Canon's 70-200 f/4L IS and 70-200 f/2.8L IS II is the sharpest of the four 70-200's. Both are fantastic. I find that for sports, I need the f/2.8.

My final suggestions are to get the 7D body. Rent the lenses until you have funds to buy the lens. Renting bodies are kinda expensive so you don't want to do it the other way around.
If budget is a concern, look into the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 VC. Also a very sharp lens. Tamron has fantastic VC. The only thing you might lose a bit is focusing speed and build quality.
DO NOT get the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 OS for sports... AF speed is too slow.

Canon 70-200 f/4L IS - $1300~ plus tax
Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II - $2400~ plus tax
Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 VC - $1400~ plus tax

Justification to get the Canon 2.8 IS II is up to you and no one else.

AF isn't fast enough for sports in my opinion. And you definitely want IS/VC.

Some form of image stabilization is great to have but try not to rely on it too much. Remember, for the shutter speeds where the IS becomes active can be too slow for sports action so you'll still get blur. IS stabilizes you, not the subject. ;)
