Hello all I just joined the group and I was looking for some opinions.

I am weighing a D7100 or a D700 been looking at side by side comps on the specs. I can see some of the obvious differences.

Glass is not a big issues as I am not heavily invested in either DX or FX glass.

I can get a D700 with grip (33K frames approx) or a d7100 for about the same. Now the D7100 would be basically new with Warranty.

Just looking for some thoughts. thanks

Huh, interesting dilemma. The only upgrade you're getting with the D700 is FF. While it does have perks they're not necessarily perks that help you get the shot whereas the 7100 has a couple advantages that could make the difference. If it were me I'd be really torn, the 7100 is great spec wise but I've seen some great stuff come from the 700 that I really like that I haven't seen equalled in the 7100. A more helpful answer would require specifics on what you're hoping to do.

Hi thanks for the reply. Just doing a bit of everything. Family pics, some nature but not much. Also some street shots. I prefer to use prime lenses although I have been eying the 70-200 f4 VR.

Hmmm I don't think you can go wrong per se as they're both great cameras. Rationally I think the 7100 is a bit more versatile, especially if there's a chance of video, but I think I'd go 700....maybe. Tough call.

I have a D700, am upgrading to a D800 and plan on getting a D7100 as a backup to the D800. the new sensor and higher res is what appeals to me. unless you want video just go for the D700 as it will last forever. if you want to be able to do video then go for the D7100 obviously. it is a very tough decision to be honest so maybe consider the weight difference. the D7100 will be much lighter with DX glass then the equivalent D700 and FX glass kit

I have the 800 and 7100 -- both excellent camera's. The D700 will give you an advantage of FF - if that is really important to you, and your photography. Otherwise the 7100 is an awesome updated DX body. And the video function is identical to the D800 without the FF FOV.

decisions decisions. The lure of FF but then I keep thinking its a 5 year old design. And even though I know MP are not everything there is that 12 vs 24 rolling around in my head. I have this habit of, how would you put it shifting gear. How are the D700 values going to hold up against the 7100.

In the long run the D700 will be more valuable than the 7100 is resale is a concern. The depreciation of crop sensor cameras, and lenses, is on a steeper slope and there are market realities (more crop sensors sold probably).

I would take the 7100 without thinking twice.

I'm with Bart on this one.... 7100 is an awesome cam....much improved, and similar ISO performance to the D700..... Only disadvantage is DX if you think that is a disadvantage. But considering that for nearly 10 years we had no other choice but to shoot DX digital

thanks all for the input. I picked up a clean D700 with the grip and a Tokina 20-35mm 2.8

Cool! You really can't go wrong with either so enjoy! Now let's see some shots! ;) Also let us know how you like the Tokina, I'm personally curious.

congrats ... the D700 is still a solid contender.... I needed to sell mine in order to fund the upgrade to the D800, but if money was not an issue, I would have held on to mine, simply to have a second FX body.

so far Liking the D700. Not so sure on the Tokina 20-35 2.8. I never really liked shooting with wide angle lenses. Fit and finish seam ok nothing spectacular and don't really like the way you move from AF to manual ( the focus ring snaps forward and back.
