Love this lens. Performs like a dream in every situation but the thing is HEAVY.
Any suggestions on a top performing lens in a similar range with less weight?
I don't need the 2.8 but I do want sharp.

I find the AF slow on this lens, anyone else?

Edit: I'm legitimately asking, wondering if "mine" needs to be calibrated. I've spoken to a few people with this lens who find it pokey but I'm not sure what level of pokey is acceptable.

I have a prime kit that I carry sometimes - less weight on three lenses vs. my single 24-70 2.8

So the three primes I carry are the 28mm AFS, 50mm AFS and 85mm AFS - the 1.8 prime trifecta as its being called.

ok... so perhaps I was wrong -- the three lenses mentioned above are only 35 grams lighter than the single 24-70.... but if you didn't carry say the 28mm, then just the 85 and 50 would be significantly lighter. Anyhow --- there are solutions out there, but the 24-70 is a great lens, and sometimes worth the weight.

The lens I am about to suggest is very cheap, dinky, a lot of distortion but very sharp. Nikon 28-70 f3.5-4.5D.
Some reviews suggests this lens for exceptional performance even on the D800 (I have it also, and when I put it on my D800, it is really usable and for its price, why not) :D.
There's probably better lenses out there, but from what you wanted to know, reminded me of this lens.
Here's the external review:

If you're keen on a Nikon with similar range *and* f/2.8, there's always the 35-70mm f/2.8. I hear it's an awesome, underrated lens.
Have a look through the TPMG selling section - I'm not absolutely certain, but you never know, someone might actually be trying to sell one.

just out of left field but have you tried the 28-80 3.5-5.6 G. Cheap Cheap lens, it was a film kit lens but it is really under rated. I used it on a D1x and D2 with great results. Just picked up another one.

A bit wider but the Tamron 17-50 2.8 is a great lens. That's if you're using a DX body.

I put my old 18-105 on again and I'm actually pretty happy with the lens. The only down side
I've noticed is the slow AF. Not really an issue, but it was what I noticed immediately.
Maybe I will go back to this as my day to day lens?

I love my 18-105 and use it all the time. The IQ and colours are brilliant. It's an underrated lens. It's lightweight and the range is so versatile. I chose it over the 24-70 2.8 Nikkor when travelling this summer.
