I recently upgraded to a 5D3 and am playing around with my lens selection. I've got the tele-end covered with my 70-200 2.8L

I had a 17-55 2.8 on my 7D - got the 24-105 in the kit with the 5d3 to replace it. I wasn't super happy with the 24-105 - so I sold it off recently.

Would you go with a Tamron 24-70 VC + 35L or a Canon 24-70ii + Sigma 50 1.4 or Canon 50 1.4?

I shot about 50% of my shots with the 17-55, 30% with my 70-200 and 20% with my 35L.

I know the Canon 24-70 is sharper, has better bokeh, and will probably retain it's value better, but I'm used to having IS on my zooms.

Thoughts?

That's a tough one I think there won't be any major differences in performance save the VC in the Tamron. That 2 extra stops could come in handy but it depends on what you're shooting. I've seen the tests the Canon is definitely sharper especially in the corners but that only makes a difference up to 4-5.6, after that it's all pretty sharp across the range.

Personally I do video a lot and I'm not a fair weather shooter, I'd probably choose anything with VC given the choice and minimal difference in IQ. Big fan of the Sigma 50mm 1.4 though, I'd choose that over the 35L.

The 35L is overrated, try the new Sigma instead ;)

Amongst a small group of friends and I, we're huge fans of the 35L. Outside of the studio my 35L and my 70-200 2.8 IS are my most used lenses, and the 35L is still my fave to shoot wide open. The Canon 50 F/1.4 is usually better stopped down so maybe get the Tamron to cover off that focal range.

I've heard good things about the sigma 35 1.4 but I'm partial to the 35L - it was the first good lens I bought, sold it to get the 70-200, regretted it and got the 35L again.

Leaning towards the Tamron right now but part of me is still a bit wary of 3rd part lenses. Has anyone shot with the Tamron 24-70 VC for a while here? Any quality issues?

I'll bite, why are you wary? I often see people quote this but they don't provide any justification as to why they are wary.

I don't have any experience with Tamron, but I have owned a Sigma 24-70 for a few years so I can speak to that. The focusing mechanism sounds like a movie robot (I have a funny story regarding demonstrating said mechanism in a cavernous abandoned space to Bartimus and alexanderhosking), and the housing is the traditional Sigma plastic (which people either like or hate). Having said that, optically the lens has been sufficient for my needs. It's done the job and allowed me to put some money towards other lenses (in my case, UWA).

The Tamron is good for half the price of the Canon. Just lacks a bit of AF speed, sharpness, and build quality. Up to you if the Canon is worth the difference.

Give reasons why you weren't super happy and maybe we can figure out what you would make you super in the lens department?

@ qualdoth - my main concern is AF sketchiness I've experienced in the past. I got to play with a couple of Sigma 30 1.4's before I bought the 35L and they had issues that couldn't be fixed with MFA.

@ Metrix - Two things I missed going from the 17-55 to the 24-105
1) F4 - vs. F2.8 for indoor shooting.
2) It didn't feel as sharp as the 17-55 I was using on the 7d - I know there could of been a whole lot of factors with the lens/body combo

I agree on the Sigma 30mm F/1.4. I bought one, had back focus issues an useless wide open for focus accuracy. I went back to Henry's, but this time took my camera with me and tested out 2 other copies they had. Both of those had front focus issues. In the end I just got my money back. Finally bit the bullet a year later to get the 35L. I tested it out and my camera at Aden's, and was super happy (I still have that picture).

And for the record I had the Sigma 105mm macro which was great and the Sigma 50-500mm which was fun. I currently have the Tamron 17-50mm non VC F/2.8 which has been great. Just wanted to note that I'm not a 3rd party basher, just someone who needs the gear to work.

I will have to agree with you on the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 which is why they have just announced its replacement as well, and the just recently released update to the Sigma 35 f/1.4 got rid of those types of problems. it truly does outperform the Nikon and Canon 35mm offerings now. and focus is finally spot on every time.

.... plus the build quality is just sexy.....

A couple of the latest Canon zooms are giving older primes a run. At some point there's sharp enough to get the shot.

Qualdoth, have you ever shot with a 24-70 2.8 Mark II? This lens is insanely sharp. I prefer it to almost any prime in that range.. that being said the AF on primes makes a huge difference and that always plays a factor into my lens selection.

OP, I think this question has more to do with your style of shooting and the types of subjects you shoot more than anything.

the new canon 24-70 f4 seems interesting to me. From what I've read on the interwebs its quite nice. I would also highly consider the sigma 35mm f1.4. Cheaper and sharper than what the big guys are doing in that space!
