Had a chance to play with one at the Detroit Auto Show last week, then promptly went out and bought one the next day. For under $200 I think you'd be hard-pressed to find another lens that shows this level of sharpness, colour, and AF speed. I've never been much of a standard-length prime user, but a day with this lens really opened my eyes up.

Anyone else got this gem in their bag?

Used to have that lens for a short while when I had my Canon system. Nice little lens. Looked a bit silly on my 1D body, but made a surprisingly good match for an old EOS 3 that I also used to have.

Glad you're being introduced to the world of primes!! Primes are the way to go. Remember, "Primes are born, not made."
Okay, bad example, but you get what I mean.

The performance of this lens sounds great, but, for me, a pancake has no appeal without either blueberries or chocolate chips and must have syrup on it. I don't see the point on an SLR.

How is the pancakeness of it make it anymore predisposed to video than a non-pancake lens?

I'm no video expert but I think a lot of the benefit for video has to do with the STM focus mechanism.

Right. But that's not particular to pancakes.

"It’s for people who, already having pretty much everything, just need something new and unobtrusive to take with them, to give them a slightly different view and inspire some new work"

I think that nails it on the head

That's the pancakeness of it? I don't see how it's any less obtrusive than the cheap 50/35mm on a SLR.... I just don't see the point on an slr other than gimmick.
