WOW.. I picked up this printer a month or so ago and I couldn't be happier.
This printer really does have what it takes to produce decent size prints.

So far I have printed only with the Epson Exhibition fiber and I have already decided
that this will be my choice of paper for now.

These 13x19 and 17x22 prints are mind blowing. Two clients have already reordered
prints which were printed elsewhere, some years back. I would not have believed it unless
I saw it first hand. These prints really are that good.

Curious to hear from others on their thoughts regarding this beast of a printer.

Cheers.

Glad to hear your report..... I'd love to get my own printer in the future.

The only thing I don't like about this printer is the inability to print panoramas (unlike my old R2880). Everyone I've made b&w prints for have at least complimented me on them, with many coming back to print more for them since they were disappointed with prints they obtained elsewhere. I've never experienced a clog, and my printer has sat at times for 6 weeks. However, I do go through the process of removing the cartridges every few months and shake them up so the ink doesn't settle. Additionally I keep the printer covered when not in in use to reduce any dust.

Welcome to the printing side! It performs very well and I couldn't complain about it. Nice choice of paper btw. The RIP disk would allow you to print beyond 22" from what I read but there is no need for me to go there so I don't have a first hand experience on that. Probably not a good thing in the absence of a roll feed unless you can improvise something.

I got mind back quite a while ago now - and the inks have at times sat idle for many weeks (probably longer then 6) and no ill effects. It's a great printer and the quality of the prints out of it are amazing!!

You can buy 8.5 x 11 sample packs of different papers by the different manufacturers and test print the same image and experiment to see what paper suits your needs the best.

Peter I do agree the exhibition matte is great - but I love the photo luster - sharper prints with just a hint of gloss to it.

J.

Just tried the photo luster which Jordan noted in the above post.
Very nice. Super sharp.
thanks Jordan

one of the guys in my photo club was saying last night that he runs nozzle tests every few days to combat any issues with ink drying up, and has never had any issues with his printer.

+1 on Epson Photoluster (95% of my prints). I also like doing prints in Moab Slickrock, but you have to be very specific on the prints you choose for it.

What types of images have you had the best results using the Moab Slickrock?
I hope to get to some other paper types in the coming months so it's always good
to get feedback from other users.

I've done a few black and white portraits, and a handful of colour landscapes.

If I had a fresh set of 80ml inks, what's the ball park range in terms of prints that you can yield from that? I know there's so many variables but I'm trying to calculate the cost/print value vs. getting prints done somewhere.

Not sure on the total volume as I'm still printing.
I always print a 4x6 first to give it a once over, then the big stuff.
So far I would have to say that I have 10 pcs at 17x22 20 pcs at 11x17 dozens of 8x10
and some 13x19.
and Im not even half done on the inks.

Lots of money to be saved by printing your own.

Cheers

Keep in mind that the initial cartridges ink usage is higher to prime the printer. 2nd set of inks lasting longer. I've saved a lot just from a lack of ink clogging alone over prior Canon printers.

Wow that's awesome. I got so lucky found an artist leaving the country selling his on Kijiji. Got the 2 year old printer, 3 new cartridges and 4 sets of paper for $700. Funny part was once I turned it on to check the heads etc. all the rest of the ink was gone lol, he told me it was still the original set inside. I had to replace an LK and LM, and going to need at least a couple more before I can run a few prints.

I bought some sample paper to test, can't wait to get started. Really happy about the purchase.

With my old 2880 I worried about my ink usage. With my 3880, I worry about my paper usage :)

17x22 Epson exhibition fibre is about $5 per sheet. add in $2 worth of ink and you have
In my opinion the best print possible for about 7 to 8 bucks. BARGAIN.......

I think I'll have to give this Exhibition fiber paper a try. I mostly use the premium matte paper as about a 3rd of my photos are B&W, and they look good on the matte. I've also got some luster paper that's been kicking around for a couple of years. I just don't like going back and forth from different paper because of the black ink usage. Other then that, it prints great.

Anyone try using the exhibition canvas satin? I've read a others having success either manually feeding through the back through trial and error until it catches, and others attaching a lead strip in the front. Just curious if anyone here has had experience printing on canvas.

Bang for the buck, nothing beats the 3880. I would love to see a 3900 thoy with the HDR ink set. I'm sure it will come one day.

A full set of ink is about $500. If you can find one with low ink I'd say $450-500 should be good?
Even better if the inks are half full or more.

I just joined this club today. $550 with 1½ supply of ink in like new condition. I picked up a Epson sample pack and a pack of 8.5x11 from Henry's on the way home from picking it up. Unfortunately they didn't have any 17x22 in stock (Burlington Henry's). Best I wait until I play with the printer a bit before I ruin a sheet that large anyhow. :)

The person I bought the printer from suggested Inkjet Mall as a source for archival quality ink. Her credentials in this are twofold for me. The first is she had some very nice prints framed in her office, the second is she has a Masters in Printmaking from The Banff Centre for Visual Arts and this is where they buy their inks. Good enough for me. Some test printing shows the quality to be amazing - the analog bit operating it all is an idiot and has ruined several expensive pieces of paper but the printer is very nice.

With the exception of this printer, I have filled all of my previous Epsons with third party ink and have never had an issue.
This goes back almost 15 years. I'm still not sure if I'm going that route with this printer?

Understandable. The person that gave me this advice appeared very competent to me. You can always wait and see how I fair...I'll probably do a refill of a few cartridges shortly.

I had an issue with the ink where I was running quite a few 8x10 prints in succession, on Epson Premium Luster, where it appeared as though at least one or two colors jammed. I had to do several cleaning cycles but the issue did resolve itself. I didn't have that problem with OEM inks but I can't be 100% certain it wasn't just me printing too much too fast, that the 3rd party ink can't handle the pace, or that it's just an inherent issue of 3rd party inks at any pace.
