I have a 580EX and am considering getting a 430ex II to act as a slave unit. I know it has to be in line of sight of the 580EX. I assume it uses an infrared signal. Does this signal go through fabric, a diffusion umbrella in particular? Any one have experience with this feature?

Any info would be appreciated.

My experience is that it isn't worth the inconsistency in firing. Radio triggers are cheap and worth it.

OK, I will stick to my PW's. Was going to try to use the IR triggering to save buying one more PW & accompanying hotshoe mount.
