So...I don't know if it's the flash or the camera but for some reason the camera is triggering the flash to fire for at least 2 seconds continuously. It happens randomly after I take a shot with the flash (off or on the camera). After taking a shot, the flash goes zzzzzzzzzzzt!! for 2 seconds with the flash on. At that time, the camera functions are locked. Can't focus, can't get to the menu, can't shoot. Sometimes it'll stay locked for a few more seconds. The longest one was about 7 seconds.

Has anyone encountered this? My camera's on firmware version 2.1.1.

Thanks,
Jeoff

Is it possible you are unknowingly pressing the DOF preview button?

Nope, definitely not.

Btw, this only happens with my 580EXII but not my Metz 58 AF-2

ya, I had it happen a few times with my 580EX (no II). Figure it's just dirt in the hotshoe or something. Often happened when I pressed play to view a photo I had just taken... go figure.

Is it possible the modelling light is going off? If so, I have heard it can burn out the flash.

Actually, Xerox is right. It's the DOF preview button. It's the way I was handling the camera in portrait mode without a grip. I have fat fingers. LOL!!! That combined with the fact that the button is easy to press is what was causing it. I didn't realize I was doing it 'coz I had no issues with the 7D. The 7D's button is slightly recessed.

And yeah...it worries me that I could inadvertently burn out the flash.

It sounds like you are pushing the modelling light. Can the DoF button on a 5D2 be re-mapped?

That is exactly it. Can it be remapped? On a 7D yes. I haven't fiddled around with the custom settings much on the 5D2 yet so I don't know.

The DoF button typically stops down the aperture blades - does it invoke the modelling light instead when a 580 is attached?

Don't think so. But you can on 5D3!
