With the launch of this bad boy tomorrow I found a couple of placeholders on Photoprice.ca for kit lenses:

24-105 kit
http://www.photoprice.ca/product/03870/ ... price.html

24-70 Mk.II kit
http://www.photoprice.ca/product/03869/ ... price.html

It should be an interesting 24 hours with the pending announcement.

I promised myself to ignore the 5d3 as a replacement to my 5d2! But up to 41 AF crosspoints and 6fps! I've always had a rough time with just 1 reliable center crosspoint AF...

I hate thinking how to justify ~$4000 to fund this bad boy.

Who knows, with any luck the rumoured specs are super exaggerated :)

Five more years and I will buy one for $1500.00 just before the5D MKIV is released :)
Looks like a nice camera but I don't NEED it so will stick to my MKI and MKII for a long while yet.
The 6 fps would be nice sometimes.

Hmm... tempting. Maybe it should be time to start thinking about upgrading from my mk I...

There is no mention in the Canon official release of a 24-70 kit. Only 24-105.

Yup - the old bait and switch.

EDIT:
There is a 24-70 II kit here:
http://www.cameratools.nl/default.asp?p ... KIII2470II

I have not seen any in North America though...

I'm still shooting with a 20D, I'm a hobbyist and proud father, who mostly takes pictures of my fast moving kids. The autofocus of the 20D sucks and the number of keepers is generally pretty low.

I've been using a friends' "retired" 5D for a few months and even though the autofocus is the same vintage, I've noticed an increase in the number of keepers. I'm guessing that even at around the same age, the 5D was rated for better autofocus.

I love the full frame experience, and I'm due for an upgrade, but I'm not sure I want to get a mark 2 and have 6 year old autofocus for another 5 years, at the same time, there's no way I can justify $3500 for the mark 3 when I don't make money from my pictures.

any thoughts or advice?

You'd probably be happy with a 60D or 7D and $2k in lenses instead.

well, neither of those are full frame, and my lens collection is pretty sufficient (and aimed at a full frame style)
f/4 24-105
f/4 70-200
100mm macro
f/1.4 50mm
16mm fisheye

I'm probably looking at 3 choices:

1. buy 5D classic for $1,000
2. buy 5D Mk ii for $2,000
3. wait until 5D Mk iii is $2,000-2,500 in 3 years

and number 2 is maybe the most likely

Tempting. Dual card slots, 41 cross type points, headphone jack for audio monitoring, DOF button finally on the more accessible side of the body (wasn't really a deal breaker). 6fps. Not sure if that's enough for me to upgrade right away... maybe in a year or so. I'll let the guys who like to get the latest/greatest to guinea pig it and report any bugs first. :p

5D3 is nice but I grudgingly have to hand this round to Nikon. Its a baby step forward over the MK2.

I have a 20D and 5DmkI .. both are already classics and I consider them collector items. Depending on how you shoot the mkIII won't give you much imho.

It'll be interesting to see the high ISO performance of this sensor compared to the D800's much more densely packed sensor. The tables might have turned, and it could be a favorite amongst wedding photographers. Although I don't see it being worth the hassle of switching brands.

silent shooting feature seen here, at approx time=1:34
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XgAgGoPZo8

you can still hear it, but it's faint.

however, the idea of a quieter shutter is not necessarily a "new feature"; the nikon d7000 had this feature well over a year ago.

1D3 (2007) has silent shutter mode (silent release), although it may have advanced slightly to what the 5D3/1DX has now.

And who knows how good this sensor is! Calling babystep this early is premature guys. It looks like a step of varying possible lengths from 7D features and 5DII features. Good stuff. I'm far more likely to pony up for this than I would the 5DII right now to "upgrade" from my 7D.

Bart makes a good point. The tables have turned and shoes are on other feet etc. For the last couple generations the Canon peeps said pixels were key and the Nikon peeps said no, it's other stuff. And I would have given the Nikon sensor the edge in that respect. It'll be interesting to watch how this pans out.

If you want one just order it from south of the border - they all have a North American warranty.

I think it got nice upgrades, but I don't see myself need the advance AF since my 5D2 is more like a studio camera and 90% time on a tripod.

Unless I want to replace my 7D with it :)
