withing the last 2 weeks I've had 2 en-el3e's die on me (no reading on the camera when the batteries are inserted and the charger will only blink twice before shutting off). Not sure what's happening here. I have them in my jacket pocket and there's nothing else metal in there (actually I have my wireless triggers in there as well). I've had them in my pocket numerous times before with other double A batteries and had no issues. Any idea what's happening? Are they shorting out somehow?

Do you have another charger you can try? It's possible it isn't charging them properly

You may have had no metal in your pocket, but I believe a similar shortage can happen to the batteries if their own contacts scrap each other, this includes AA's. This may be the case and you have just been lucky until now.

It's not the charger because the battery that has been in the camera has worked fine. Just the ones I've kept in my pocket. Also how does a batteries own contacts rub each other?

I am referring to the contacts of one battery rubbing against the contacts of another. This could even be your AA's. The connectors are metal after all and could short the battery like other metal objects. Why Nikon provides the plastic tray with their batteries. My spare is always in the tray when not in use.
