I've been trying to sell my D200 and 18-200 VR lens for a while now with little success. Now I'm debating going into Henry's and selling to them and looking at buying either a D5100 or D7000 as a smaller body to complement my D700. Does anyone have any experience selling to Henry's? I'm aware that they need to make a buck so won't be getting top dollar but based on my luck on here and Craig's, anything would be better than nothing.

Any one have any experience with them?

I would think you could definitely make more money on Kijiji/Craigslist than Henry's. I'm surprised you have been having issues. I got rid of my D90/50 1.8 and 70-300 4.5-5.6 on Kijiji in two days last weekend.

It is never worth it to sell it to Henry's. They have to make their cut so they would offer you half of what you could sell it for. Lower your price until it sells.

Nope, I listed all my items 15-30% over what I asked on this forum, then gladly took all their lowball offers on the D90 and 70-300; and got $110 for my 50mm 1.8D! I agree that Kijiji can be a huge hassle, but this method works for me the majority of the time.

Didn't try Kijiji but tried Craigslist with reasonable prices based on what I saw the going rate should be. Lowballs were coming in pretty quickly which sucked. Oh well, I'll see what Henry's offer and decide from there.

Here's what you do to lowballers. Take their email address and sign up to a whole bunch of random mailing lists with it. Problem solved.

What problem does that solve? It takes your time to do, and all those emails will just go straight to their spam folder anyways.

Any more brilliant ideas?

Here is the thing with Kijiji and Craigslist. What you see as the market rate is definitely not the market rate. If everyone has the same price you will have to price yours a bit lower in order to sell it. Why would they be tempted to buy yours at the market rate? Put your price below the market rate and it will sell.

Get a quote from Henry's. Sell at a price between market and what you would get from Henry's.

Do not sell to Henry's or Headshots their subsidiary, they'll milk you dry. I once inquired about selling my 35 1.4 AIS and 50 1.2 AIS and they offered me $100 each! I was like "are you for real?"

Henry's will almost certainly rip you off. I think Kijiji or even ebay is your best bet.

If you sell something on Kijiji or Craigslist, say on the ad, "Please leave your cell number if you are interested". You will get less lowball enquiries.

Speaking as a previous Henry's employee I'd advise you to do the same thing I advised my customers who came in to do trade-ins. Sell it privately. There's typically a 100% mark-up on the trade-in value of used gear this provides a buffer should they not sell you item before it becomes technologically obsolete and have to put it on sale, so if you see at Henry's they're selling a D200 for $200 you'd get like $100 max providing it is in A++ condition.

Kijiji is good, but always mark it up about 30% higher than you want, so when you're lowballed it's not a harsh blow and you'll sell it. Craigslist seems to attract weirdos and ebay is only good on free listing days.

Truth to all that was said above: I looked up how much a used Canon G10 was going for on their site - $350, then e-mailed for an approximate quote - $110.

I would rather use my G10 as a paperweight than give it up to Henry's!

I don't really understand the logic behind selling off a semi-pro level body for peanuts to Henry's and then buying a consumer level replacement that will cost you more than peanuts? Anyways, like others have said, Henry's will most definitely give you less than the lowballers are offering, so why not just sell to the lowballers if Henry's low offer doesn't bother you?

I've witnessed trade in transaction in Henry's Outlet on other day. The person got: 900$ for 5D Mark II, 300$ from 14-40L, 20$ for Canon 50mm/1.8....and so on

I had little luck with Kijiji and Craigslist, so I finally put mine up on eBay and it didn't take long to get past the reserve price...it's my first time selling anything on eBay, but it's been a lot smoother on my system than talking to Henry's!

Hmm, never thought about ebay. I've bought stuff, I should consider selling it there. Any concerns with sellers and hijacked accounts? I know that PP protects the buyer more than the seller.

Still holding onto the D200/18-200 I was thinking of getting rid of. I'll probably just sell the D200 and keep the lens, it's a fairly sharp copy.

I find if you price your items reasonably on Craigslist and Kijiji they sell fairly quickly. I sold my 5D mk I within a few days of listing it for $850 (I listed it at $950). Having said that, eBay is certainly another good option, so long as you are aware of the listing fees and eBay's cut.

What are you asking for the D200 and 18-200mm by the way? I'm not a Nikon guy but maybe someone else who is can chime in on what to expect to get for them??

I have had things for sale for weeks before a good offer finally came along.... Kijiji seems to be more serious than CL, I find the lowballers are everywhere, and I agree with what Holly said ... mark it up beyond your real price that you want... I did that with my D700, and sold it within a couple weeks of listing it. Although the D700 is a much more desirable model right now than the D200 would be .... but the D200 is still a decent body, and you should be able to get a fair price for it - just ask more, and negotiate.

Interesting, I've had exactly the opposite experience, hehe. Short answer, list at both places to make sure!

My experience echoes lxdesign's so much so that I've given up on CL altogether.

There is also the buy/sell forum on Redflag Deals which gets decent traffic.

I listed a G10 at $250 and got offers of $100...and a crock who started badgering me about how a brand new ELPH would be a better deal. While I'm sure it's a superb camera, it's not even in the same category being a point and shoot...

Mind you, I've had many successes with Craigslist and Kijiji, both buying and selling, anything from textbooks to cellphones to 2x 430EX IIs for $200 each!

I used to have a lot of successes on CL...but Kijiji has been more dependable personally for the past two years.
