On a budget for a tripod.

At most the tripod need's to hold a 5D with a 100mm L macro lens attached.

Can you please provide suggestions?

Secondhand, either craigslist, or here on tpmg in the buy/sell. Budget $300 if you can. You'll find a way to outgrow it otherwise IMHO.

Look into Vanguard. You'll be able to get a great tripod new for around $200.

Currently I'm using an entry level manfrotto+ballhead that I spent $300 on and It's not the greatest. Specifically it's height, it only goes up about 4 feet before I have to start using the stem, and the stem on that thing sucks.

My next tripod will be the one above. Its no $500+ tripod, but it'll do the job.

Go to downtown or Henrys and try them. For my first tripod I brought a $109 Velbon Sherpa because it was the stiffest of the under $200 tripods. 7 years later and it still does the job and still one of the better under $200 tripods. It's important to make sure the tripod carrying capacity is greater then your camera plus heaviest lens. If you shoot video you might want a different type of head (fluid head). Personally I like the standard pan tilt rather then a ball head I find them easier to do panoramic shots.

A Tripod is one of the things that I would not cheap out on.....
300$ is a good budget...try getting a ball head easy to recompose shots...and gets to the angle you want in no time...

try the above ...

Viton's post fails to include the cost of the head, quick release system, etc.

The Manfrotto QR plates (commonly called RC2) are the most popular, but I have issues with them.

Which version of the 5D? Mk 1, Mk 2, Mk 3?

Do you have the tripod collar for your 100 L?
