DigitalRev Review & DigitalRev 5D III vs D800.

As has been said on here before, DigitalRev is a bit fluffy, but at the same time, Kai usually comes up with usability stuff that other reviewers don't and does approach reviews a bit differently.

Besides the auto focus, the chip inside is also a nice upgrade which enables usable pic's at high ISO's

True, but not necessarily a bad thing. Though, Kai is no Clarkson, May or Hammond. Kai is very honest and just about the only reviewer on the Web that will poor water all over a camera and lens to confirm weather sealing.

Anyway, Canon 5D Mk III plays Angry Birds.

Angry birds? for real!?
The dial could actually be pretty good to setup the angle's.

wow.... autofocus is insane! The 5D2 and 7D and all those that come before... they really don't have any autofocus tracking at all by comparison.

High ISO is also stupid compared to even my 5D2.

Shot my dog on the couch at ISO12800 and there is less noise then my 5D2 at ISO800.

Paul, have you tested your 500/F4/IS in AI Servo mode? There is a well documented issue with the 200/F2/IS and 800/IS emitting load noises from the IS when in AI Servo mode.

Agreed. I have enabled only the 41 cross type AF points and all of them are accurate! Loving this new AF system. Such an upgrade from my old 5D2's 9-point AF.

Cool, perhaps this will stop people from losing money when they switch systems in order to get "better" images :)

Canon vs Nikon has been going on since man crushed grapes. Both systems are neck and neck and they offer advantages over the other in one way, shape or form. I don't think many are switching systems although some are I am sure...

No issues with AF and all that with the 500. :-)

Images seem soft at full resolution though compared to the 5D2... need to do some more test shots.

That image softness, according to the internets, appears to be a processing issue and nothing technical with the camera. I suspect there will be a firmware update as wells as updates to processing engines shortly that provides a fix. With the handful of "glitches," this one I think is the most glaring, it appears Canon may have rushed this one to market a little early fearing a 36MP fanfare.

Here's part one of a comprehensive review from The Digital Picture.

Wow, pretty long and comprehensive review I will have to go back when I have more time - thanks for posting. The java stuff seems broken at the moment so the 'hover to see different images' is broken but I am sure that will be resolved shortly. I checked the 5DII review and it works so it is not my browser. The Digital Picture reviews rock!

Posting this here as well..

Quote:
To Users of the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera

Thank you for using Canon products.

The phenomenon described below has been confirmed when using the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera.
Canon is now examining the countermeasures and once the countermeasures are decided, we will post the information on our Web site.

Phenomenon
In extremely dark environments, if the LCD panel illuminates, the displayed exposure value may change as a result of the AE sensor’s detection of light from the LCD panel.

Affected Product
Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera

Support
Once the preparations are complete, we will be making an announcement on our Web site.

This information is for residents of the United States and Puerto Rico only. If you do not reside in the USA or Puerto Rico, please contact the Canon Customer Support Center in your region.

More 5DIII issues/stuff:

Quote:
From LensRentals.com
Roger from LensRentals.com had this to say today about 3 new 5D Mark III’s they received directly from Canon.

Please read the entire two paragraphs.

I just got 3 new 5D IIIs this morning. Compared to the 90 some odd previous ones, the new ones all have a much thicker, stiffer plastic cover on the TOP (not main) LCD with a slightly larger black border. On all of the previous cameras the top LCD cover was thin enough that if you pressed on it firmly it would touch the LCD (apparent because the LCD under your finger would turn black for a second). The new cover is much stiffer and you can’t press hard enough to touch the LCD screen.

I can’t say this is the change that’s being made, but these recent camera came direct from Canon so it’s certainly possible. And it’s also possible that this simply means Canon used up all of their first supply of top LCD covers and the second is just slightly different for no real reason.

Roger and I are friends, and he knows gear about as well as anyone else I personally know.

Public Service Announcement
Please don’t start pressing hard your top LCD covers. Thanks David
