That is a bit vague. What do you need it for mainly and can you afford the d4?

Also, the waiting list for the d4 will be long.

Is there a reason why you want to go to full frame? It appears you are currently shooting with a D3100/D90 and two kit lenses. Maybe start with some faster lenses?

I agree with him. If I had money to buy a D4, already have dslr bodies, but don't have a good set of lenses, I'd invest my money into high-quality fast lenses (probably couple of primes).

If you have money to go for pro full frame AND professional lenses, my all means, go for it :)

If you feel the need to go full frame - there is nothing wrong with the D700. Its a very good camera, and much better than any previous generation of camera's. I used to shoot with the D2h, and man - the difference in image quality along was worth the D700 upgrade.

D700 + lenses!

Unless you have a money tree.... if that's the case just buy the D4 and all the lenses you can carry

well the d800 is just as good as the d4, but let's see how the d4 feels and compare both of the d4 and the d800

I am actually sitting on the fence until the fabled D800 is released. I may just continue to shoot the D700 ... because really there is no need for me to upgrade. the D700 is a stellar camera really. Much better than anything I have shot with in the past.

All you need to think about is, aside from having a commander mode, the D4 can do shit that a D700 can only dream of having the capability to do.

I dont' even see why this is a question if you can afford a D4. Just get it instead of having to kick yourself "I should've got the latest and greatest"

Investing time and/or money into learning about light, exposure, aperture, composietion, etc will have a much bigger impact on your photography than either a d700 or a D4. Of course, if you've got money burning a whole in your pocket, go for it.

You'll be one of the first on 'our' block to have a D800

But is that "shit" going to make him a better photographer? Let's be real here -- do you really NEED to have a D4 -- NO! Will a D700 do the job. YES.

We'll see... right now, I had already made up my mind to get a 13" macbook pro with the proceeds from my work in the Yukon in March. I waited a year before I upgraded to the D700 after its release.

But the D4 will make cat photos so much better without having to know about white balance, shutter speed or composition. Just shoot it with the professional "P" mode.

Only caveat is video capabilities i guess.

That is a compelling argument - I might need to switch from Canon if that is the case.

Think about it, he can get the D4, that sweet new wireless transmitter with web portal built in; Connect it to his wireless network, forward the port, and give the IP out to someone who actually knows how to use a camera. Voila, professional photos!

Hrm... what a great conundrum for an IP lawyer :)

:?: The rumored D800 is targetted at a totally different market from the D4

Do you know what you want to shoot and why you want a 35mm framed sensor?

If we wanted to be real, we'd still be shooting film. I mean afterall, why do we even need a D700 when a F4 would do the same thing?

Actually a D3100 might do the same job.

Heck a polaroid camera will do the same job, a cell phone cam would do the same job.

I know I dont need a D4; but does the OP? Does a person need a 5000 dollar Chanel bag? No; but their vanity does  I never understand why some people on forums are always against people on buying the most expensive a certain brand has to offer. If he can afford it, buy 3 of em!

Remember w/o ppl blowing money on the latest and greatest, us vultures would never have great deals waiting for us when they are over the novelty of things ;)

I think you are missing the vein of which most people are replying.
The OP asked a VERY vague question, and has posted little else to help clarify our requests or to justify our explanations.
Further more, in this absence of relevance the forum has done what the internet does best: TROLL.
and it just so happens that the OP gave us lots of information to TROLL on other parts of the forum.

As such we TROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL.
