two methods --- shadow box which you have already mentioned, or open and laid flat against the glass.

You can try michael's, but most places have gotten rid of prefab shadow boxes. You will most likely have to custom make one. You could however also just frame it as if it were a print under a mat. That is what I did for a lot of customers when I was doing custom framing.

Or you can try and get a hold of a second copy, carefully remove the spread and mount it in a frame? Store the other mag in an archive sleeve?

I've seen shadow boxes at Victor Gallery on Queen, but I'm not sure they'd have the size you'd need.

Michaels has poster frames, that are two pieces of clear plastic in a frame. That might be a good way of framing an open magazine, as it could be turned around to see both sides.

If you intend to display the whole magazine as opposed to just the pages then you unavoidably need a frame deep enough to accommodate that depth (commonly referred as shadow box)
Avoid squeezing the magazine pages against the glass as transitions in relative humidity may cause the pages to stick to the glass.
There are numerous ways to display the magazine inside the frame, custom framing is what you are looking for if you need to get the job done right.

Call Steve @ the framing depot, he'll give you ideas about how to proceed and what the price may be
hope that helps
cheers
