I'm not too familiar with the procedure of registering your camera for the 1 year warranty.

Does the registering of the product through the canon website mean that you get the 1 year warranty or do you have to send the warranty card that came with the camera?

It's either/or for online registration for ANY manufacturer...never heard any different.

HOWEVER, you should still keep your receipt in a place where you can find it as you will still need it for proof...anyone can enter any purchase date at any time on a website or warranty card, it's harder to fake a receipt.
