So i have been using the a700 for a while now and waiting for the upgrade sony was suppose to come out maybe this year. Unfortunately the new a7xx did not get announced.

I think i will be switching to either the canon 7D or something nikon. Its sad, i liked the sony system, but they just didn't come up with a camera which can handle video in time for me.

So here i am now, I leaning towards the 7D.
what lenses should I be looking at.
1. I need a wide angle for architectural photos for work. maybe a high quality prime or zoom. I think I would go wide like 10mm or close to that.

2. I need a normal zoom anywhere from 17-xxmm something comparable to a zeiss?

i think i'll start off with getting two lenses first.

thanks for any help.

1. 14L 2.8 II?

2. Perhaps the 24-105L or, the better imo, 24-70L. If you don't mind a "crop" lens the 17-55 with IS is usually well regarded. If you want lenses which compete with Zeiss Canons L range is where you're going to want to look for the most part.

Consider a wide angle 17mm TS if you can afford it. I know you can correct perspective in PS but a TS can do it better for architecture.

stupid sony didn't announce nex 7 either

If you're going to switch to canon 17mm or 24mm TSE will definitely be awesome for building shots since you get so much more control. Since you want a crop body, I guess 17mm would be better like metrix said.

Nikon 14-24mm, 24-70mm and 24mm PC-E

That is my set up for architectural work and holy heck is it ever amazing.

Anyone who has ever used those lenses will not be able to even say anything bad about them.

Yes part of the reason why i am switching is full video control and also tiltshift lenses.
Sad about the switch but i do need the camera to do a few of the contracts for some video coming up pretty soon, so i can't wait. too bad.

I don't have the budget at the moment for the TS but that is something i will get. for wide, how is the 10-22 compared to the 17-40L? i am looking around those price range for my lenses.

whats the difference between the 17-55 and 24-70L IQ? would anyone suggest the sigma 24-70?

The Tokina is a great lens but not so much for architecture, there is considerable distortion. Fixable in post but... yeah. Just about everyone but those who defend the purchase of the 17-55 2.8 IS will say that the 24-70 is a sharper better lens. Cause it is.

As for the 17-40 v the 10-20, they're two different ranges on a crop and not really comparable.

I do not think I can help you as I am using Pentax the upgrade cycle of which is even slower than Sony. But besides the need to upgrade gear wise may I know if there is anything that your Sony camera cannot manage better than Nikon/Canon?

Lots of choices depending on whether you want EF-S or EF lenses or other brands and weight considerations. I recommend the Canon 17-55 (EF-S), Canon 24-70, Tamron 17-50, Tamron 28-75, Canon 70-200 F4(non IS, IS) F2.8 (non IS, IS), Sigma 24-70 (latest release), Canon 50 1.8 (niffy fifty should be in every Canon shooters bag), Canon 16-35 F2.8, Canon 17-40 F4 -- so many great lenses to choose from.

Why is the A55 not an option? From a few of the reviews I've read it does video better then the 7D (autofocus in particular).

Sony is nice, but I want video now with full manual control. sadly sony doesn't offer this now and I need the camera coming up in the next month.

I took a look at the a33 few days ago. i think i still prefer the OVF instead, i found my eyes weren't too comfortable after viewing the EVF for too long. I got a bit dizzy looking at it for too long at only the store.

I have decided i'm going to skip the FF choice as I won't be going to FF for atleast a year or two. I am going to get the canon 10-22mm for wide for interior pics for now.
As for the walk around I am still debating between the canon 17-55 / 24-70 / 24-105. Any of these range will probably work out for me, but i am looking for the best IQ and colors i can get.

thanks for all the help

Then you want the 24-70.

I've owned and/or used a bunch of the canon lenses mentioned and I have to admit the 17-55 still is my fav...I'd still have a copy if it fit on my 1D...its light, has IS, is 2.8, quick and accurate at focussing, very sharp, nice bokeh, colour, contrast...etc etc etc...I just loved that lens...

How long did you have it Mike? I've read repeatedly that the build quality on that lens isn't up to par after a while. For a $1k lens not much cheaper than the comparative Ls... I have read, and seen examples that agree with what you've said otherwise.

I owned it for over a year...took it to sandy places, salty places, extreme altitude, extreme cold, etc etc etc and it worked great, build was quite decent...I've heard horror stories about dust, but I put on a uv filter and never had an issue...

After reading many reviews. And all the help here I have decided to get the 7d with 10-22 and 17-55. I will just deal with the ff stuff when I actually am ready to get that. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Maybe when you switch to ff, Sony will have a body that suits your needs.

I agree. when the sony ff with video and all that comes out, I may have to switch board once again, as i do find the ergonomics of the high end alphas quite simple and functional. Also I really like their natural color look of the zeiss.
