So i held off previously on the Dell Deals and am now really needing a monitor. So... they have the 22" Ultrasharp for $229.00 and the 24" Ultrasharp for $499.00.

Now my question is: With the extra 2 inches and few hundred more pixels of real estate on the 24" monitor will it really be any better then the 22" is? (It will already be much larger then my current 19" and definitely larger then the 15" MacBook Pro i am connecting it to) Is that little bit of extra real estate worth the doubling of the price?

Any thoughts everyone?

Ignore the 22", it is a TN panel ... go for the 24" as it's an IPS panel. The 22" is cheaper for a reason, better off with the 24" if you're going to manage your colour.

"Itsaphoto" made my point...I was wondering if one was a TN panel and the other was an IPS.

Quickly explained (the K.I.S.S. version), TN panels show only 6 bits of each (RGB) colour, while IPS actually shows 8bits of each...the reason for the existence 6bit monitors (besides being cheaper) is they change the picture faster and are better for games and entertainment, while the IPS is obviously better for those interested in photography.

$499 for a 24" monitor seems expensive for now.
I have my 24" BENQ 1920X1080 with HDMI inputs for $210.

Not the best outhere, but is more than half price comparing with $499.

Did you read the part about TN versus IPS?

Thanks everyone for your advice and insight. I ended up purchasing the U2410 24" monitor and it should arrive mid next week. I really do need accurate colours and my current TN panel 19" just isn't enough even calibrated (plus its dying). This IPS panel should do me very well for the next few years. or longer hopefully... :P

I also decided that for all f the editing I do I would really enjoy the extra real estate on the 24" monitor and its larger for video watching as well.

Thanks again and I will update with my thoughts on the monitor when I receive and calibrate it.

Cheers,
Scott

Good luck and let us know how it goes (aka. a review), as I may consider picking on up to replace the CRT in my dual monitor set up (other is a 24" S-PVA).

sorry bad joke in the off hours, it's meant to congrat you on your latest latest macro lens.

Scott, I was curious what device are you using for calibration?

I had alot of problems calibrating my Dell 2408 with the Spyder 2 pro. I think my monitor has/had some really saturated reds that I could not seem to tone down.

Don't forget there was 2 recently released Dell IPS monitors with a more attractive price point:

Dell U2211H 22" 1920 x 1080 (really 21.5)
Dell U2311H 23" 1920 x 1080

The 23 Inch is very attractive at this price.

@ itsaphoto - I certainly will review it. Should arrive mid to late next week so by the weekend I'll have my review

@ foggy - I will be using a Pantone huey pro for now until my color munki photo arrives next month. I find that my huey pro is better then the original huey and spyder 2 I had used previously and my tests of the color munki are only slighty better than the huey pro but it allows my to create custom ICC profiles for my printers and various papers/substrates that I use.

Great info. If they go on sale during the Dell deal days I may pick one up.

AND IT HAS ARRIVED!!!!!!

So my first hour of use in complete with the new Dell 2410 monitor.

All i have to say about it right now is WOW! this thing is huge!

I have calibrated it with the Pantone Huey Pro and it has calibrated nicely.

The design of this monitor is incredibly sleek and the stand is VERY stable (it is built like a tank!). the adjustments up and down are a bit tricky at first but you can easily get the hang of it (it seems to be lightly spring loaded for ease of use which out of the box provides a bit of extra resistance) It also moves very smoothly side to side and up and down and I am currently typing this message with the monitor turned on a crazy angle to demonstrate the amazing 178

Oh and I forgot to mention that I am also viewing this off of my Macbook Pro 15" with a cable I purchased separately from http://estore.circuitassembly.com/

I bought a 2m Mini-Displayport to Displayport cable ($35CAD w/ next day FedEx)

The reason I did this is to minimize any chance of signal loss through a connector. I have experienced this in the past and it is really annoying so I decided to get a dedicated cable and the 2m length is perfect for my setup with just a bit of move around room. 2M sounds like a lot but I like for my cables to be hidden and it allows me to connect the computer to the display and hide excess behind everything cleanly with no bent-out-of-shape cables.

Had a really bad experience with some monoprice items beforeand so therefore they dont get my business anymore and i pay a bit extra for much higher quality cables.

here is a photo of my new setup freshly calibrated:

I only buy cables from Monoprice. Never had any trouble ordering from them.

Nice photo and way to go for 2nd monitor. Have you tried calibrating the LCD with your MacBook?

thats what i was doing when i took the photo. Used the Pantone Huey Pro. I have used the MacBook built-in calibration software but it isn't anywhere near as good as a proper calibrator.

I've found this nice site with tons of ICC profiles and LCD settings you may interest in, try the one with your monitor and see the difference with hueyPro.

I would never use other peoples ICC profiles if I'm working on prints I'm selling.

For anyone looking for a monitor, Dell has their 24 inch UltraSharp U2410 on sale for only $449.

http://accessories.dell.com/sna/product ... u=320-8277

Hoping that their 23 inch goes on sale as well.

That's a pretty good price, something like almost a third of the price of the 2405FPW I bought 4.5 years ago! Second screen would be nice to have....
