The Canon 135mm f/2L is the only lens I owned that I wish was available on the Nikons...

Nikon does have their equivalent version of the 135 f2 but with defocus control. It's a crazy sharp lens too with great bokeh. My bro-in-law recently picked up this lens after trying out a friend's version. Costs about $150.-200. more than the Canon version.

Sounds like Nikon is taking the hint from Sony, as odd as such an idea is.

The Defocus Image Control ring on this lens is interesting. Anyone seen any other lenses with it?

SONY SAL135F28 135mm F2.8 [T4.5] STF has a similar ring

Actually I think it is the other way around.

Nikon135mm DC is released 1990 (it is noted in Ken Rockwell's article) while the Minolta version is released 1999 (http://www.the135stf.net/index.html)

My point was actually on the lines of introducing VR in faster than f/2.8 primes, so my comment was more about the ZA 135 than the STF 135.

I'd like that 85 but the 135, well, I'd like that more I think. I too want a 35 f1.4..

That said, I think the 85 is in need of an update.

Cheers,
Dave

It's also available on the 105/2D DC, which is actually the better of the two lenses.

Minolta/Sony's 135/2.8 T4.5 STF is a different beast altogether and a far more exotic design. DC just plays with spherical abberation to tweak the bokeh a bit around the in-focus plane, STF uses a special element and a second aperture mechanism to generate a completely smooth transition to OOF and a buttery smooth bokeh. No other lens comes close with regards to smooth oof areas with moderate depth of field.

None of the CZ or Sony lenses have in-lens stabilization, I thought? In any case, the Nikkor 200mm f/2.0 VR has been around for years now.

Correct. Does not nullify the point of some sort of stabilization in an f/1.8 prime though. That remains my original point.

Point taken, but you're comparing apples to oranges. Don't compare a $5000 lens to $1500 lenses, and lenses with very different purposes.

Yeah, but if you're going to compare in-body stabilization (which doesn't care about the lens aperture or focal length or zoom vs prime) with in-lens stabilization, then I damn well can compare two sub-f/2.8 prime lenses with VR if I want. 8)
