I thought maybe someone here could provide a reason/solution to this. I'm using the package software to scan, and using the epson perfection 4490. My friend has the same scanner and it does the exact same thing, from time to time.

It comes with a 35mm film holder as well as a MF holder, and one side of the 35mm and on all the MF scans I get this annoying line right through the shot. It randomly happens, sometimes when its been on a long time, or just when I turn it on.

any idea why?

old scanner i had looong ago did something like this due to the motor moving the light/scan thing jerking during the process. it was random so the location of the line was random as well.

Try cleaning the scanner glass (both sides) and see if that helps.

The source looks to be coming from the sensor part of your scanner. If it was on the scanning surface it would show up as a spec of dust. Might be a piece of lint/dust on the sensor that needs cleaning.

hmm... I never had that problem with my 4490 when I owned it. I would say that a piece of dust or something is most logical and perhaps the cause of your problem.

If it's brand new don't do a thing, get it exchanged as it's "defective".

It's obvious that it's something inside on the scanner head as it's in a straight line all the way down the scan.

I've had it for three weeks...I can't take it back. I'm going to try cleaning it again. Its so bizzare though, it happens inconsistently. maybe the scanner needs a good shake, lol.

It's probably dust or debris on the scanner. I've had the same issue crop up on my 4490 and it was fixed with a thorough cleaning of the glass.
