I shoot the 40D. For reasons of organization I would like to change the directories that I write to on the CF card. Is there an easy way to tell the camera to create a new directory and write there instead?

I don't think there is a way to do this in camera but why don't you do this when importing to your computer?

Because when I am shooting lots of pctures at a gymnastics meet it is easier on the back end to separate the the subject by directory.

The 7D lets youi create and select folders, but you cannot rename the folders in-camera.

All the 1D and 1Ds models can also do this.

But if you setup the folders on the computer with the names in the DCIM folder - 8 chars only, you can select them in camera.

There's a "Select Folder" option in the menu. The same option also allows you to create a folder.

I am going to partially answer my own question...

If you choose in file numbering mode from "Continuous numbering" to "Manual reset" you can instruct the camera to start a new directory and renumber from 1. Not exaclty what I am after but better than nothing.

I believe that's only on the 7D, not the 40D...

According to Canon it is on the 50D 5DMkII and the 7D (I presume).

Hey Dan .. just checked my 5D and it has the Select Folder option .. it's exactly what you need. Under this option you can select folders you have created and/or there is an option to Create 'new' Folders.

So you can take like 100 shots, then create a new folder and shoot 100 more, and so on.

I don't know if this option is on the 40D but I found this video that can accomplish basically the same thing using the File Numbering --> manual reset function -- which creates a new folder each time you set it

... oops .. I just read your comment above .. looks like you already figured this out :)

Buy a 5D and you'll be laughing ..

But seriously I've seen a bunch of 5Ds on CL lately. Sell your 40D and you're more than half there .. hehe.
