Looks like Tamron has finally entered into the race for fast focusing with their new USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) system.

considering the 17-50 non VC seems to be better than the new VC version, maybe you dont want Tamron tinkering with that lens any further. The non VC 17-50 works pretty good as it is.

I wouldn't be surprised if this sparks a whole new line of lenses from Tamron. 24-70f2.8 USD VC, 70-200f2.8 USD VC, 14-24f2.8 USD VC, 300f2.8 USD VC etc etc.

Yeah, the hold up was probably the marketing department trying to come up with an abbreviation that hasn't already been used. So now we have USM (Canon), SWM (Nikon), SSM (Minolta/Sony), SDM (Pentax), HSM (Sigma), and USD (Tamron). Anyone else?

pretty good eh, I think the non-vc version will be perfect with USM. VC is the last thing this lens needs. What it needs is a USM so it doesn't scare the crap out of everyone every time I try to focus.

Looks like time well wasted, and they have tragically failed...USD has been used for quite some time in monetary field :D

Maybe it's a sign of things to come with their new pricing? Maybe someone had too much LSD

Olympus has SWD (Supersonic Wave Drive), not to be confused with SSWF (Supersonic Wave Filter).

Leica has some really weird names for their lens types, Summilux, Vario-Elmar, Vario-Elmarit??? Now THAT is confusing!

Sonic motors to not necessarily mean faster focusing. F still equals MA. The benefits of them are typically the DMF (direct manual focus), and the silent factor.

As an example, the Minolta 80-200/2.8 from 1985 (screwdriver), on the right body is known to AF faster than the 70-200/2.8 SSM. The Nikon 50 AF D screwdriver is regarded to be faster focusing than the 50 AF G. The 85L is USM, but still takes a while to move all that glass.
