Hi guys,

(Please excuse the slightly ghetto-looking subject. That's because of the character limitation.)

I live in Toronto, and I've never purchased anything from abroad that required me to have to pay for custom/duty fees.

However, soon I'm planning to buy some stuff from MaxSaver, and since they're based in Hong Kong, I will have to pay duty fees right?

I have some questions about this matter:

1). Roughly, how much is the duty fee? I think it depends on the value of the order, but is there such a thing as "pay $5 duty fee for every $50 worth of purchase"? (I made that up)

2). I heard that we are required to pay for the duty fee only if the order exceeds $20. Is that true?

3). How do we pay the fee? So let's say someone from Canada Post brings the package to my house.....so do I pay that guy or what?

4). From your experience, did you get your MaxSaver order delivered by Canada Post or Fedex/UPS/DHL? If so, did you have to pay for a *brokerage* fee? If so, how much?

Thanks a lot!

1. It depends how much you order, you can call up custom to see how much they will charge for the items you are interested. Basically the more you buy the more duty/custom you have to pay.

2. Not sure about this.

3. and 4. Maxsaver uses HK Post, when it arrives to Canada, it becomes Canada Post. When the mailman comes to your house, you pay the mailman for both duty and handling fees.

You missed the group buy, which is just a few thread below yours. Happy shopping with Maxsaver.

Here is what you may have to pay:
Handling fee: $6 (fixed)
GST: 5% - based on value
PST 8% - based on value
Duty: 6% (rarely) - based on value
So if your order is $100, you'll likely pay $6 + $5 + $8 + $6 = ~$25.

2). I heard that we are required to pay for the duty fee only if the order exceeds $20. Is that true?
Correct - unless the item is marked as gift. Gifts are free up to $60. For everything over $60, (declared or assesed value) you pay on the full amount. Canada Post can open your package to confirm contents and establish actual value.

3). How do we pay the fee? So let's say someone from Canada Post brings the package to my house.....so do I pay that guy or what?
Canada Post will leave you a note that they are holding your package at the nearest post office outlet. You take this note there, pay the fees and pick up your package. Your package will have a detailed invoice attached listing the fees you are paying.

4). From your experience, did you get your MaxSaver order delivered by Canada Post or Fedex/UPS/DHL? If so, did you have to pay for a *brokerage* fee? If so, how much?
My last package from Maxsaver arrived via post so brokerage fees was not an issue. It was also less than $20 so I paid nothing. They have this info on their web site.

Thanks a lot!
You are welcome!

I missed the gtoup buy also. Wonder what is the benefits of a group buy? Do they have wholesale prices for group orders?

No you didn't miss the group buy, it's still happening right now.

I organized the group buy because I am a reseller with Maxsaver, and I get the listing for wholesale price. The difference in wholesale and the price on their site let us absorb all shipping costs, if not then it's very close to no shipping cost.

Ask people that have joined the GB know it's only beneficial to the buyers, not the seller.

Have you thought about offering a similar group buy service for other sites such as Dealextream or Linkdelight? There are some small items that interest me on those sites but for the cost of shipping.

As far as I know the two sites you mentioned do not offer wholesale price for resellers. Unless you know someone that works for them and can provide us whole price then I am willing to organize GB with them.

No, I am afraid I don't. Oh well. The Maxsaver buys have been so successful and it is nice you handling all the ordering and shipping it would have been nice to order through you for those other sites as well.

Never hurts to ask.
