I have a SF24D flash that I intend to use on my rangefinder. It's a nice, portable flash, but it doesn't offer bounce capability.

I am wondering if any of you have tried to build your own light modifier such that it redirects the light to the 60/90 degrees towards the ceiling? If so, how successful was your light modifier and can you share the idea?

At this moment, I will try to avoid buying a flash with bounce capabilities... let's just say this is the main restraint as we discuss our ideas.

Thanks.

LumiQuest has a whole range of bounce mods specifically made for this purpose:

Downtown Camera sells a bunch of them (LQ) or Asian ripoffs of these for less.

There's also this, which is a very cool concept, but I've never seen anyone use them :

Thanks. I have looked at the LQ products, but none of them redirects the light upward. All of them assumes the flash is already pointed upward.

The other site you advised me has an interesting product. I too, wonder who has have experience with it.

I've posted this link a million times ( I should get some commission) but this will do what you ask even when the flash head can't point upwards.
The flash head points ahead and into the diffuser which can be aimed upwards.

But SF24D doesn't have a flash head per se. It's a little candybar shaped unit.

Ah ... well that does make a difference but it's easy enough to modify the design to accommodate for this.

The best answer, is at Dante Stella's page.

The Nikon TTL off-camera cord uses the same pinout as the Leica, and once you have the flash off-camera, you can bounce it any which way.

A cheap Vivitar or Sunpak auto-thyristor w/ a tilt/swivet head would be a good alternative if you didn't already get the SF24D.
