Thanks for the report James. I was holding out on these 'cause I couldn't get a definitive answer as to how long these batteries hold a charge for.

Costco has a 4AA and 2AAA with charger kit for $18. I'm going to pick up a couple kits now. :D

Well, I don't mean to be rude, but the plural of anecdote is not data. Someone actually did a fairlyextensive study. Not in a proper lab setting, but fairly well controlled tests from a consumer point of view:

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/sho ... p?t=677074

Bottom line, batteries marked with higher mAH ratings do last longer than eneloops, but you have to make sure that they are freshly charged because eneloops do hold their charge for a much longer time than the competition.

Wow.. rage...

the enloops so far for me as well, are the best refresh and longest held charge out of all the batts I've tried

to me, the best batt by far.

I fail to see why personal insult is necessary.

For what it's worth, I myself own and love eneloops, but I have never made actual measurements on how well these batteries perform.

Battery life and performance (e.g. flash recharge time) are empirically verifiable and measurable, and not really a matter of opinion.

Since someone else has made these measurements, and I happened to come across them, I thought people might be interested.

If you have disagreements with the methods, measurements and conclusions of that little experiment, we can have a civil discussion, if you like. Note I am not the author of that post, nor am I related in any way to the author, so I have no vested interest in defending it.

As with any benchmarks, it's always good to understand what's going on and analyse the numbers to see if they apply in your situation.

Looking at a typical photographers scenario, the Eneloops performed very well in power retention and refresh times up to about 200 flash pops in the test.

The 2nd thing you need to realize, is that the 300EZ used in the tests has no manual settings. It's firing at full power _every_ time, the 5 second refresh times are a good indication here. When was the last time you fired your flash 200 times in a row at full power, or for that matter, over the period of 2 hours?

With those facts in mind, now go back and re-evaluate the test and rankings up to 200 flash pops. I think you'll see the Eneloops rank much higher.

I think TIFF sleep deprivation has something to do it...

Report from the field: eneloop 'AA' batteries and charger

Just used these on assignment with Red Carpet Diary's during TIFF over the past two weeks, I shot every day, thousands of flash triggers over the two week period, I had 12 eneloop AA in my kit and 1 charger.

Bottom line is I only had to rotate 8 batteries, 4 in the flash and four in the charger, they lasted a long time, in fact I often ended up putting in fresh ones simply because I could not believe I was still shooting with a set, anyway, can tell you that they are very strong batteries that charge pretty quickly, the charger works great with no wires, it has a flip out prong and is very light. We will see how they perform in the long haul!

Purchased at:
NICA Power Battery
5155 Spectrum Way #14
Mississauga, ON
905 624 0000

1 pack 'AA' - 4 batteries $13.50
1 charger w/ 4 "AA' batteries $21.50

Thanks - I have been thinking of picking some up - i will hit Costco this week and grab some

I went to Costco at lunch today

Picked up a package with
6xAA
2xAAA
2 C Cell converters
2 D Cell converters

$17.97 before tax

They were out of the charger package - I went to 4 other stores, without luck

I will hit that NICA store I guess

This is a link to a high end battery charger/conditioner. It has C and D step up casings - pretty cool actually.

I'd never seen or heard of them before, but they are a C or D cell sized battery, that has a holder for an AA battery inside

Slip the AA inside, use it as a full C or D battery

pretty cool idea
