Nokia just announced a 41MP phone today! It's called the 808 Pureview and is supposed to the the successor to the Nokia N8. The sensor is 1/1.2", or 2.5 times bigger than the one in the Nokia N8.

If you haven't checked it out, you owe it to yourself to:

You might also find this interview with Damian Dining- Nokia's chief of imaging, interesting:

Hmmm. It captures 41mp images but down samples and saves a 5mp image. Oversampling for marketing appeal?

Awesome images for a phone though.

I think the oversampling allows you to capture images using multiple image sensor pixels grouped as one, so you get exceptional low light performance. There was a picture in there that was shot at night and you really can't notice any noise in it because of this.

Not sure if they will allow you to capture 41MP pictures too, but I assume so.

I am more interested in how this technology could change the DSLR space. Theoretically, if you have enough megapixels for this technology, you can do away with optical zoom (and the associated distortion) for a relatively modest zoom range.

nokia at 130k employees can do a lot more than just singularly focus on one product area and if oversampling and soft-pixel-combing tech works out, they would have a foot hold on this technology and related patents that would be sought out by incumbent digital camera companies like nikon, canon, etc., they will get a huge win. i can imagine that sensor improvements is the way to go than trying to attach large, heavy and expensive lenses to compensate for sensor shortcomings. this tech could make obsolete huge F2.8 zooms and F1.2 primes and turn them into novelty lenses like the fisheye and tiltshifts.

i don't get that.. you make the sensor receptors very tiny so you can fit more of them onto the chip. the smaller the receptor, the less light it can let in. So to compensate, you average out the light over multiple receptors. why not just make less receptors that are just larger and there for more efficient in capturing the light? Lets make a big problem so we can fix it.

Why do you think that Canon went with the 22mp for it's 1dx and 5d3?? because more pixels means less light can be captured per pixel receptor and more noise.
