I am looking to buy one.. have heaerd it is better than the Canon 17-55 2.8 since the canon is a dust sucker!! and obviously the tamron is much cheaper but has better reviews over the sigma 18-50 2.8.

any suggestions?

When was the last time dust in a lens ruined a shot for you?

I have the lens in question in the Nikon mount. It is possible for you to meet many TPMGers with this lens in either mount -- one time there were three of us at a social.

According to reviews, the Tamron is quite comparable to the Nikon 17-55 f/2.8, but at about half the price:

I have the version with the built-in motor. To manually focus, you need to flip the switch on the lens first. (I may have had a case where MF did not confirm focus with the body, so I had to flip the switch on the body as well... but I have since cleaned the contacts on the lens (early contact issues are no suprise) and have not encountered this again recently). The point I am making here is that these days I'd be willing to pay a little more for this little handling issue to go away... but not double so I would likely buy this one again.

If you like your standard zooms, then this is an off-brand lens I would recommend. When I got mine, it didn't come off for weeks.

The Canon also offers IS and USM, as well as extra 5mm of reach, which is equal to about half a foot step forward :)

I've had my 17-55 for about two years until the IS motor failed, and it had a bit of dust inside, but honestly it was the best crop lens I've ever owned until I went FF. So far, it's also the only standard zoom to offer IS and 2.8 aperture on any system. I know Tamron just announced an IS version of their lens, but that will bump the price quite significantly and offer less of an advantage to people who need instant and accurate auto-focus.

If I was still shooting crop sensor, the 17-55 (which only took $125 to fix) would still be my number one lens.

I have the Nikon version also. As stated above the performance of this lens equals or beats the 17-55 Nikon lens at a fraction of the cost. Some Nikon Nazi's out there will swear the opposite, I don't mind third party equipment as long as it hold it's own.

I use to have the Canon mount one and I love it. Best walk-around lens for me. Taken many great shots with it and didn't have any issues. I think the lens was defiantely bang for the buck. I always recommend this lens for those that are just starting out. The extra cash for the Canon IS will probably get you a flash.

The focus is a bit loud but it didn't bother me much.
