My 30D has met the requirements for "lemon replacement".

The replacement will be a 50D body (free). Warranty will have to be re-purchased if I wish too (which I will).

Or.... I can take the $1299 retail value for the 50D, and apply it towards a 5D MkII (retails for $3299), and get that instead. And then upgrade all the EFS lenses that no longer fit, etc...

Decisions, decisions...

(if these are my life's worst decisions, I'm doing ok...)

there is no decision...get the 5D mark II lol

$1300 off the price is huge

maybe you can get the 5D2 kit with the 24-105L lens would be like $2800 before taxes and you would have a good walk around lens

once you go L lenses you usually don't go back hahaha

good luck with your "decision"

If $2000 is within budget, sure, full frame is very very nice.

But, you might need to replace more than EF-S lens because of the crop factor. I don't know what kind of lens you shoot with most of the time. But for example, if you love to shoot with 70-200 2.8. You suddenly need to replace that lens with a 120-300 2.8 just to cover the same FOV. On the other hand, if you're a wide angle shooter, then you'll gaining a lot on the wide end.

If you want to look at it that way, you can also say that since the 5D has higher MP you can crop a photo to regain the lost reach. Granted, the 6MP difference is not exactly equal to 1.6x crop at all focal lengths.

Well, as will be labelled by most perspectives, I "chickened out." I got the 50D.

Lenses that would have become useless to me are the Canon 10-22, and 17-55, plus my Sigma 50-150. And, true to point mentioned, the 70-200 would lose some zoom (though cropping is valid).

I truly was (and still am) intrigued by the movie mode of the new 5D, but it's gonna have to wait for me for a while.

To the other question, yes, it was Henry's extended warranty. It cost me $169 when I bought it on the 30D, and extended the manufacturer's warranty by three extra years. The "anti-lemon" policy is if, during the warranty period, your product requires repair more than twice for the same problem, it will be exchanged for an equivalent model. I had brought the 30D to Sun Camera twice already for back-focussing issues, and was still unhappy with the focussing performance, so voila, 50D.

No one in this thread has suggested a 50D so far, yet you still got the 50D despite of the overwhelming one-sided advices here. So what's the point of this thread??

Congrats on the new camera! I don't think there is anything wrong with 50D decision.

Everyone in this thread has more money than me, methinks!

Or are you being serious, and this was a shot of some kind?

the main reason so many ppl suggested 5d mark II is because its tough to even get $100 discount and yet you have $1300

anyone would love to get a 5D II for $2000

the movie mode alone isn't the best feature of the 5D II

if you shoot high iso's then i can get better photos with a F4 lens then you can with a F2.8 (DoF is another story :P)

either way both cameras are good, i hope you at least tried them both out before buying

2/3 of your lenses would sell pretty high, i think you would only lose money on the sigma

enjoy the new camera :)

Whats wrong with the 50D? I can't say mine has any issues, I also have a 1D MK III (no dot, so no focus issues), and although the 50D autofocus can't compare, its still a great camera

IMHO, that's the way I would have gone. Actually, that's not entirely true... I would have spent the $2000 to get the 5D Mark II, then sold it off for $3200, then picked up a secondhand 40D somewhere for $750, and finally put the remaining $450 towards a vacation somewhere.

I would have done the same thing slightly different
I'd get D300 from the dark side instead of 40d,
and spend the rest of the money, which would be literally nothing, for lens. lol
