There's a whole lot more to how the "Leica photographers" work and have that special "look", than just picking up a Leica.

There's nothing wrong with wanting a Leica.. I have a 70year old IIIa and a slightly more modern 50 year old M3 - both considerably older than me :)

I'm just concerned that you're heading for a major disappointment.

Yeah, I got'cha. I wanted a Leica, and know there will be a steep learning curve to get the results I am looking for. That said, I am willing to invest the time into learning it. I will be going to test one out locally before committing to buying one.

Other the Leicaboutique in Montreal, is there other places I should consider buying? It seems like Leicaboutique has pretty darn good price comparing to other retailers.

Lastly, there's a M8-d selling at Leicaboutique. It is essentially a M8 but with all the upgrades for $5,195. What are your thoughts in this?

francishmt - what type of images are you hoping to produce with a M8/M8.2 that you can't get with your current 5DMkII, or the D700 and D300 you've owned before it? As a long time M and SLR user, I can tell you that a SLR is a far more versatile camera and that a rangefinder is not a magic bullet. Frankly speaking, a rangefinder vs SLR is largely just a matter of personal preference in ergonomics and VFs. Borrowing a rangefinder from a friend and shooting with it for a couple of weeks might take the mystic out of it for you... much cheaper than buying an M8/8.2.

If you have your heart set on buying another camera, then at least get one new that offers a full warranty. The M8 is notorious for having various issues (especially when it first came out) and the price difference between new and used isn't that big and the premium for new is well worth the price of 2 year warranty that comes with a new body.

I've considered the M8 in the past but decided that the price/realiability issues and crop factor were sufficient disincentive to stick with film in my M3 and Hexar RF bodies.

Good luck whatever you decide.

I also feel the leica taste in the photos. But somehow I realized it is more due to the lens. So you may consider use a Sony A7 to shoot digital.

Do you have a sony A7? I think you can try the lens first to see if you like them.
